ONALASKA, WIS. – Wendy S. Hunnewell, 50, and formerly of West Salem, Wis., was called home Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis. She was born July 2, 1962, in Hartford, Conn., to Richard and Priscilla (Hopkins) Hunnewell.
Wendy was a 1980 graduate of West Salem High School. She began her teaching career after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1984. Wendy taught in the La Crosse (Wis.) school district for more than 20 years, teaching special education at Lincoln Middle School, Longfellow Middle School and Central High School. While teaching at Lincoln Middle School, she was honored to receive the Teacher of the Year Award. Wendy was famous for her tie-dye skills and her students always looked forward to tie-dye day at school. Wendy lived her life reaching out to help people. She will be remembered as having the biggest of all hearts and her enormous generosity. Wendy loved fishing, photography, playing guitar, swimming, technology, collecting paper weights and spending time with her dogs. Most especially, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and spending time on the family farm taking photos.
Survivors include her parents, Richard and Priscilla Hunnewell; brother, Wade Hunnewell; good friend, Janice Appell; uncle, Gary and wife, Bonnie Hunnewell; adopted daughter, Lucinda and husband, Jeremy Smothers; seven grandchildren, several cousins and many friends. Wendy was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Elden and Beulah Hunnewell; and maternal grandparents, Pleaman and Claire Hopkins. The family thanks all those involved in Wendy’s care at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis. You exceeded our every expectation.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 2503 Main St., La Crosse, Wis., with the Rev. Bill Hoglund officiating. Private family burial will be held at Prospect Hill Cemetery, La Crescent, Minn. Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Jostad Chapel, 121 N.
