PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for stabbing a bouncer at what was supposed to be an alcohol- and drug-free party last year.
Abdi Awad received a 25-year sentence with seven years suspended on Wednesday in Cumberland County Unified Criminal Court on a charge of elevated aggravated assault.
Authorities say Awad stabbed Donald Brown twice in the back at the party in March 2011.
Alcohol and drugs were prohibited from the party, which drew a largely Somali crowd. A melee erupted after a bouncer saw alcohol passed among a group that included Awad.
Awad stabbed Brown after another security person tried to prevent Awad from intervening.
The Portland Press Herald reported that Awad sobbed and apologized in court.
I always thought chem free parties would be kind of quiet and subdued.
But I guess Mr Awad wanted to liven up things with
the ” largely somali crowd” .
Too bad it involved stabbing someone else in the back.

18 Years?
Daluz & Sexton each stabbed someone & were out in one & two years respectively. If they’d rec’d this type of sentence, three other people would still be alive. Why the disparate sentencing?

Inconsistent, in too many cases nonexistent sentencing from too many judges.
Not only did he try to flee, but he tried to intimidate witnesses.
He won’t be missed.
They should put posters up with his story, and the result, which just might deter the next cowardly loser from following in his footsteps.
Awad certainly livened things up. Stabbing someone in the back for no reason other than he was doing his job is a cowardly act, times 2 in this instance. He deserves a harsh sentence.
Deport him NOW! Why feed this scum for 17 years.
Right! Somalia is country where killing each other is their way of life. He would feel right at home there, except their welfare system isn’t as good as ours!
That’s a good sentence for a violent person. I wonder why other violent people don’t get the same sentence.
It’s better down here at least than it is up there in Bangor. Up there you can set someone on fire and kill them and only get 6 years…

Awad’s lawyer said that “in accordance with Somali culture, Awad inherited the status of his father, who was in a group that was considered the lowest in that society’s hierarchy. ”
So Awad’s problems stem from the fact that the Somali immigrants refuse to adapt to the ways of their new homeland, and instead cling to the backwardness of their previous homeland. Didn’t a certain Lewiston mayor just get hammered for basically saying the same thing?
Why bother to come here if they are just going to recreate the place they left behind?
Why come here? Many of the Somalis are not immigrants, they are political refugees. They did not want to leave home behind, their home crumbled around them. As far as their making them leave their culture behind, they don’t have to. They have to stop doing some things that were ok there but not here, but for the most part they can keep their culture. Besides, if it were required to embrace the culture of the land then all of us would be speaking some dialect of Native American.
