FAYETTE, Maine — Police in Maine are investigating the theft of up to 200 bales of hay from a horse barn.
The hay was probably stolen late Tuesday night and was reported missing Wednesday morning when Roxanne Turner, whose parents own the barn in the central Maine community of Fayette, went out to feed the horses.
Turner estimates the hay was worth about $600.
Turner told the Kennebec Journal she thinks the hay will be sold because demand in other parts of the country is high because of the drought this summer.
She says what’s most disturbing is that her parents were sleeping in the nearby house while the thieves took the hay and she is now concerned for their safety.
Turner says the family has plenty of hay left.
Ok, copper wire and pipe theft, scrap metal theft, jewelry theft, firewood theft
and now stealing hay ??

Nope..they steal bronze monument’s from cemeteries, parks and other public/private places. Anything of value is a potential target. I can’t imagine stealing Hay. It’s large, needs loud and very obvious equipment (usually) to move it around.Hay bales could be rolled somewhere out of sight but I doubt that’s the case. Maybe the same type of guy that stole fire wood with his compact Nissan car :) The hay thief could’ve strapped some on his roof..ha! Guess they could’ve been the squared type that a man can handle but still takes time, a truck…flatbed ect..
I don’t blame the lady for being worried about her parents with brazened theft’s on your property. I would suggest a couple motion detector lights around the exterior and maybe a shotgun. I wish these fools tried to steal my stuff…they would have the rudest awakening.
The worst things thieves do to a person besides the actual monetary aspect is the thought they could be back anytime. The uneasy,insecure feeling you have IN YOUR OWN HOME is awful ! I hope these nice people secure their place…It’s sad but essential in the world today.(city and rural)
200 bales at $600 mostlikely means that it was the smaller square bales that would have taken them about an hour to load and would have taken a fairly decent size trailer to haul. As it is her price is on the low side, most square bales are going for $4 – $5 each locally and more outside of the state. A game camera would be a good investment for sure!
Yes BCB I thought about suggesting to place a low cost outside camera’s like the hunting ones. No running wires , weather resistent. snaps pics every couple of seconds or usually on motion. Sometimes the resolution isn’t the best and you never know where they can come in from so it’s hard to get details on things and angles … but a least you might know how many people,type of vehicle. Anythings better than nothing when it comes to things like this.
Seriously…? What is this world coming to when a person steal HAY!!!??? I need to quit reading the newspaper…everytime I read anything some child is being murdered or kidnapped, crazies are on bath salts and now people are stealing HAY!!! I feel bad for the future generations. Sigh….
