ORONO, Maine — Eighty-four percent of University of Maine student-athletes are graduating within six years of enrolling in college, according to the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate figures released Thursday and announced by the university in a press release.

Maine had four teams honored with perfect 100 scores and four different Maine teams had their GSR rise in the past year, according to the release.

All of Maine’s 17 sports were either at or above the federal graduation rate. The Maine men’s swimming team along with the women’s swimming team, women’s soccer team and softball team all received 100 scores.

Men’s basketball, cross-country/track and field, football and men’s ice hockey all saw their scores improve in the past year.

Overall, the national GSR for the 2005 cohort was at 81 percent, a point off the 82 percent of the 2004 cohort, but still higher than any other previous cohort.

There were 29 different America East teams honored for perfect 100 GSR scores. Boston University led the way with six, while Maine was tied for second with Hartford, Vermont and UMBC, which all had four teams honored.

The GSR is based on student-athletes who entered college during the 2005-06 cohort.

  1. Create a grading system where you can be the best, or at least the 19th winner…………………

    1. Always a cynic …

Check the rosters, a common major but not a majority. In fact, only one on the hockey team, most of the rest business majors.

  2. You know it’s not uncommon for many students to take an extra year and be done in 5 these days.  But from what I remember maybe it takes athletes an extra 2 because they are playing sports?  I remember some of my friends not doing particularly well in some classes as well as changing majors because they were playing away games or at practices all the time.  When they re took classes after the season was over they did quite well, whether that is a result of knowing what was coming for material after having failed or having more time to commit who can say?  But there certainly were plenty that finished on time.

  3. You two jokers want to take a guess at the average graduation rate for non athletes at UMaine? I can promise you it is not near as high as the rate in which UMaine graduates its student-athletes. But then again if you weren’t biased you’d know that.

Edit: I’ll just tell you… Only 60% of UMaine students graduate within 6 years compared to 84% of its student athletes. But you knew that when you were making your ridiculous comments right?

    1. Yes and the Athletes have a lot of people making sure they graduate because if they do not they can not play. The general student population gets far less academic support.

  4. However, 99.9% of UMO student athletes do not sniff NCAA post-season play during that same time span ;) :)
