BANGOR – Beloved James Nicholas Bougopoulos, 75, passed away Oct. 26, 2012, at a Bangor hospital on his name day. He was born March 12, 1937, in Boston, the son of Nicholas and Aphrodite (Boenis) Bougopoulos.
James served in the U.S. Army. He was an All-Star baseball pitcher in Panama City, where he was given the name “Wild Greek.” James was employed at Nissen Bakery, Portland, for 44 years as the general manager until his retirement. He was a sports enthusiast, an avid bowler and golfer, and was a member of Hermon Meadows Golf Club.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his second wife, Bonnie Bougopoulos. James is survived by his daughter, Stacey Garland of Somersworth, N.H.; son, Demetrius Bougopoulos of Somersworth, N.H.; granddaughter, Abigail Garland of Somersworth, N.H.; brother, Charles Bougopoulos and his wife, Margaret, of San Jose, Calif.; two sisters, Sophie Desmond of Milton, Mass., and Anna and her husband, Jack McCullagh, of East Weymouth, Mass.; and mother of his children, Shelia Bougopoulos-Bowdler of Cape Elizabeth.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 4-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 90 Sanford St., Bangor, with the Rev. Adam Metropoulos, presbyter. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, immediately after the service.
