CHERRYFIELD – Roger Gordon Fickett Sr., 72, passed away Oct. 25, 2012, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital with family and friends by his side. He was born Jan. 25, 1940, at Fickett’s Point in Milbridge, son of Nathaniel and Mary (Linscott) Fickett.
He was raised and schooled in Cherryfield. At the Academy, Charlie Wakefield his interest in music introduced him to band and alto saxophone. Roger was a self-taught guitarist playing different types of standard and electric guitars while singing. With fathers, uncles and sons, he developed and sustained a lifelong love of the outdoors that included hunting, fishing, gardening, logging, blueberrying and clamming. In 1958 he married his sweetheart, Suzie Pinkham of Milbridge, and they began the establishment of a home and family. They moved to Bangor where at Woolworth’s Lunch Counter, Roger began a career in cooking which led him to cook in lovely restaurants in the Bangor/Orono area. Later, he was a local truck driver but longed for the coast and home. They returned to Cherryfield where he worked in Wymans’ fish factory and ultimately retired from RW Matthews, where he greeted customers and pumped gas for many years. He loved people and enjoyed making them laugh and bringing happiness to their life.
He was predeceased by his parents, wife; an infant son, Walter Lee; and sister, Claudette Hall and her husband, Charlie, of Calais. He is survived by his daughter, Katy Sue Gray of Washington state; sons, Roger Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Bangor, Dean and wife, Naomie, of Virginia and Russel and wife, Maja, of South Carolina; sister, Judy Pangburn and husband, Terrence, of Holden; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; one aunt, Agnes Fickett of Cherryfield; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at Cherryfield American Legion, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, with Pastor Craig Fickett officiating. Burial will be afterward at Maple Rock Cemetery, Cherryfield. In lieu of flowers, a tree and remembrance bench will be established in the spring in a park on the banks of the Narraguagus River in Cherryfield.
