PALMYRA, Tenn., and CLIFTON – Richard died unexpectedly Oct. 28, 2012, at his home in Tennessee. He was born May 18, 1950, in Bangor, to Grace LeClair Oakes and Robert Spencer Sr.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert Spencer Jr. and David Spencer; and his mother, Grace Oakes. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Lotty Frances Spencer of Palmyra, Tenn.; children, Denise Spencer Pond of Clifton, Aphonse Spencer and partner, Audrey Allen, of Hampden, Randy Neblett and wife, Julia, of Tennessee and Michael Neblett and wife, Mandy, of Tennessee; grandchildren, Justin Robinson, Brooklynn and Hunter Pond, Ryan Kaylee and Matthew Neblett, Michael and Marshall Neblett; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He is also survived by brothers, Michael Spencer and wife, Una, of Holden, Randy Spencer of Bridgewater, Mass., and Keith Davis of Searsmont; sisters, Mary White of Kingman, Lisa Spencer of Thomaston and Ruth Davis of Pennsylvania; and sisters-in-law, Pauline Spencer of East Bridgewater, Mass., and JoAnn Spencer of Brockton, Mass.
Richard was born and raised in Clifton and graduated from Brewer High School in 1968. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening and woodworking. Richard had served as Clifton town constable and was a member of Ralph J. Pollard Masonic Lodge, Orrington. Richard started his career with Merle Fletcher in the logging business. He then drove tractor trailer for Merrill Transport for several years as a respected trainer. He later opened Dixieland Logging Business with wife Frances in Tennessee. Richard was passionate about pit bulls. He loved the breed and believed they were misunderstood. He rescued two loyal companions of the breed, Taz and Marvin.
Services will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday at Sykes Funeral Home, Clarksville, Tenn. A spring memorial service to be announced for family and friends in Maine.
