ROCKLAND, Maine — The developer of a proposed 65-foot building that would be the tallest in the city is asking community officials to renew their approval for the project.
The Rockland Planning Board is expected to consider the request for a renewal of the site plan approval when it meets Tuesday night at City Hall.
Lyman Morse received approval in October 2010 to construct the building at 250 Main St., at the intersection with Pleasant Street where Hollydachs Pet Center and Aquarium had been located. The approval for the $2.4 million project was good for two years.
The foundation for the five-story building was constructed in October 2011. Since then, the company has been trying to market the space.
The first floor of the proposed building would be for retail stores and the second floor for offices. The third and fourth floors each would contain two residential condominiums, while the top floor would be reserved for a single residential condo.
“We have had some delays in getting started and have plans for getting up and running in the near future,” stated a Oct. 28 letter to the city’s code enforcement office from Ron Defoe, who is general manager of Lyman Morse. “We are still marketing the building and have great plans for the building as you know. We are looking forward to explaining this at the meeting on Nov. 6.”
Lyman Morse is a boat-building company in Thomaston that planned the Rockland development to help keep its workers employed. The boatyard employs welders, plumbers and electricians.
Maybe it’s just me but I believe if Lyman-Morse was going to build this, it would have been built already. It’s not like they don’t have the money.
Their last project was the solar generator that was subsidized by taxpayers. They sold the plans, made a very healthy profit and pocketed the cash. These people have plenty of money and can afford their own business ventures and certainly do not need to be subsidized by us.
