MILLINOCKET – Helen L. Currie, 87, wife of the late Clayton L. Currie, went to be with her Lord and Savior Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at her home. She was born Oct. 6, 1925, in Millinocket, daughter of Clyde and Gladys (Townsend) Folsom.
Helen grew up in Millinocket and attended Millinocket schools, graduating from Stearns High School, class of 1944. She worked at Great Northern Paper Co. as a secretary as a young woman. Helen was a lifelong member of Millinocket Baptist Church, serving in various capacities. She also was active in several local organizations – Millinocket Literary Club, Millinocket Historical Society Museum, Bangor Nature Club, Katahdin Area Support Group and Maine-ly Doll Club. “Grammie Helen,” as she was affectionately known to many, loved her family and enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren. Her door was always open, never turning anyone away. She had a zest for living life to the fullest and was always ready to try something new.
She is survived by three daughters, Barbara DiFrederico and husband, Carl, of Millinocket, Gladys Morrison and husband, Davis, of Millinocket and Lurlene “Lenie” Goodwin and husband, Jim, of Bangor and Berlin, N.H.; six grandchildren, Louis DiFrederico, Darcy Blythman, Ryan Morrison, Marcy Lalone, Jamie Goodwin and Katie Grant; nine great-grandchildren, Jack DiFrederico, Molly, Eva and Lilah Blythman, Aysha and Gavin Lalone, Nicholas and Dayton Bell, and Dominic Grant; sister, Lurlene Lawton of Orlando, Fla.; brother, Clyde Folsom Jr. and wife, Carolyn, of Bangor; sisters-in-law, Iola Pasquine of Portland and Eunice Barnett of Millinocket; many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and stepmother, Julie Folsom, Helen was predeceased by her loving husband and best friend of 61 years, Clayton Currie; infant daughter, Flora Currie; brother, James Folsom; stepsister, Plooma Mayo; nephew, Gary Lawton; and brothers-in-law, Kelvie Currie, Dominic Pasquine, Clark Lawton and Kenneth Barnett.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Millinocket Baptist Church, 297 Penobscot Ave., Millinocket, where a funeral service to celebrate her life will begin 1 p.m. with Pastor Tim Bossie officiating.
