WATERVILLE, Maine — A man and woman were taken to the hospital Thursday night after their Jeep struck a tree on College Avenue, police said Friday.

Ian Wentworth, 21, and Shannon Bryant, 20, both of Benton, were headed northbound near the Britt Street intersection when the Jeep veered off the road, hit a tree and flipped onto its side around 6:30 p.m., Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said.

Wentworth, who was driving, told police at the scene that he had fallen asleep, according to Rumsey.

Wentworth and Bryant, who both had to be extricated from the car by rescue personnel, were taken to Thayer Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. A hospital spokeswoman said Friday they have since been released.

Rumsey said the accident remains under investigation, and preliminary reports indicate speed could be a factor.

“We are taking a look at the vehicle to determine if the driver will face charges,” Rumsey said.

The Jeep was totaled in the crash.

  1. The Jeep did not all by itself hit the tree. It was the driver who fell asleep that allowed it to hit the tree. It was human error, not mechanical failure. Maybe I feel the need to stick up for the Jeep because I own one myself, and they are reliable vehicles as long as there are no loose nuts behind the wheel.
