AUBURN, Maine — An armed man has been taken into custody at the Shaw’s supermarket lot on Center Street, ending a 4½-hour standoff with police.
Randolph Nutter, 36, of Auburn, was taken into custody just before 4 p.m. Monday; Center Street and the Veterans Bridge were re-opened minutes later.
According to Auburn Police Chief Phil Crowell, Nutter turned himself in and has been charged with theft and creating a standoff. He will be evaluated at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center before being transported to the Androscoggin County Jail.
Crowell said that just after 11 a.m. Monday, Nutter attempted to snatch a woman’s purse at Walmart and fled to the Shaw’s supermarket parking lot, where he was then surrounded by police.
Nutter, who police said was holding a gun on his lap as he sat in his gray Jeep Cherokee, threatened to harm himself and any police officer who approached his car.
During the standoff, Christine Simpson, 32, of Winthrop, identified herself to the media as someone who has known Nutter since they were children and said she talked to him “as this was all going down. He said he was surrounded by police,” Simpson said.
At 12:30, members of the State Police Tactical Team, with shields raised, were getting in place to assist Auburn police, including stationing a rifleman on the roof at the nearby JC Penney store.
Police evacuated the parking lot at the Auburn Mall across from where the Cherokee was parked and trained long guns and handguns on the driver of that vehicle.
Until about 1 p.m. police were attempting to talk to the driver through a bullhorn, and could be heard repeating: “Roll down your window. Throw out your keys. Show your hands. We can end this peacefully. Do so now.”
They were also offering “to get you the help you’re asking for.”
At 12:55, well more than an hour after the standoff began, the driver partially rolled his window down after police said they couldn’t hear him very well. Minutes later, after he had tossed his keys out of the window, he rolled the window back up. Police asked him to stop using his cell phone.
Conversation between police and Nutter quieted about 1:05 p.m., and Nutter appeared to have stopped communicating with police through his car window until just before he surrendered.
According to Simpson, Nutter is a mechanic who has raced cars at Oxford Plains Speedway.
According to state Department of Motor Vehicle records, Nutter has five speeding convictions and one conviction of operating under the influence in 2008. According to state records, Nutter also has several criminal convictions, including criminal trespass in 1990, violation of a protection order and violating conditions of release in 2007.
The Shaw’s parking lot, and the adjacent Auburn Mall and lot, were evacuated and the Veterans Bridge and northbound and southbound lanes of Center Street in front of Shaw’s were closed to all traffic.
Police re-routed Center Street traffic around the back side of the Auburn Mall and Auburn Public Works crews set up barricades blocking access to the Shaw’s and mall parking lots. All of the stores in the Shaw’s plaza were evacuated. JC Penney was also evacuated, as was much of the mall building before its doors were locked. Most of the customers left the mall as soon as they were informed of the standoff, but many of the employees remained in the mall’s common areas.
About three dozen people who couldn’t get to their cars or chose not to leave stayed in mall.
Police also ordered George’s Pizza — across Center Street from Shaw’s — closed and evacuated for the duration of the standoff.
Kayt DeMerchant posted on the Sun Journal’s Facebook page: “I was caught right in the middle of this. The police are doing an excellent job. They have closed Shaw’s and got me to my car safely and out of the parking lot quickly. I am so glad I did not have my kids with me. Scary, scary stuff!”
According to Crowell, police will conduct in an internal after-action briefing to talk about their response.

Just waiting on the sniper from the SWAT team. Stand-by.
Nobody is speculating a laid off worker yet? Wow the Monday morning quarterbacks must be sleeping in late today….
It’s tough to even speculate anymore with this stuff happening almost on a normal basis now.
It probably is not. All people laid off found out either today or yesterday. Bangor laid off more than i expected to hear
how many in bangor
I have heard 50 plus. That is only hearsay. I will find out later for sure when i go shopping. They all spill the beans down there
what about ellsworth . the manager at ellsworth used to be at bangor shaws
i know that 3 people lost their jobs in dover
good i used to work at the Bangor ones and the one in Dover and Waterville from time to time…time to rot inhell
I worked less than a month in Bangor on Maine street, and Ellsworth for over a year. I quit Bangor because the Manager there did not do his job and they hired punk kids to be shift leaders. Pretty sad thing to od.
Well, if it is a Shaw’s employee who’s been terminated he’s showing that the stress is more than he can handle. If that’s the case, let us hope that he gets the help that he needs to cope with his own situation.
yet another standoff
I’m waiting for the stores to all shut down from what I hear its not that far away…we’re gonna have a party in the parking lot!
Let me guess. There is a pharmacy in the store……
I hope this gets handled well and no one get hurt . I talked to a retired police chief and he told me a story about the time a man had a gun to his head and he also had a gun to the other mans head . Well he got lucky he did not have to use his gun . He wrestled the man to the ground arrested him and found out it was not a real gun . He would have been completely justified in killing the man. Guess he got lucky he did not have to kill anyone . Lets hope for the best outcome here .
Sharpshooters??? Auburn…. The new Da Nang.
and so it begins
Almost every day we are seeing this now. :(
wonder why i think i know the answer. economy
You are right. Very right.
And it’s really good compared to some places.
pretty bad
Bet it’s just a misunderstanding about a you-yube video that the Jeep driver found offensive….nuthin to see here folks…
Ok so the source this is copied from has much more details on a last update at 11:58 this morning http://www.sunjournal.com/news/lewiston-auburn/2012/11/05/police-standoff-under-way-auburn-shaws-parking-lot/1276318
Whatever happened at BJs Club was not a good excuse for pulling a gun on another customer. We have all had the urge to hurt the person who gets in the express lane with 92 items but most of us do not do anything but silently fume. Now he has created a much bigger situation out of it. Clearly, he has problems but threatening to harm someone else and/or himself is not the way to deal with them.
“… the driver reportedly pulled a gun on a customer at nearby BJ’s Wholesale Club just after 11:15 a.m Monday. …”
And evidently he went to the Shaws parking lot after that. That’s the only Shaws connection in the story so far.
I’ll take his Jeep!
Nothing like blurring out the license plate number.
Is everyone noticing the crime, the general frustration from people , has gone up since LePage has been governor.
Wow! Problem solved.
Cool aid drinker
Yes.
I think you are seeing something where there is nothing. Plenty of crime before Lepage and I seem to recall seeing more drug related crime increasing before he got in office. I think it’s more a sign of the times and people in desperation.
Eh, I don’t like him either, but I suspect this is a bit of a reach. There’s no way of being sure without a lot more statistical investigation than I’m interested in doing; either way, “reports I remember seeing in the BDN over the last couple-three years” isn’t really a sound starting point for such an analysis.
I really can’t stand LePage, but even I wouldn’t blame him for this. Crime does tend to rise during a recession when people can’t get what they need honestly, even illegal drugs.
He is the direct cause of a lot of anguish and hopelessness.
I imagine he’s made the lives of many miserable. Maybe not this guy but there are plenty of others out there that are feeling pain and misery as a result of his policies.
He probably made this guy as miserable as the rest of us, but we are not all out there committing crime, so I think this man had some deeper stressors working against him.
Yep. Maybe he just has bad timing. Or maybe his policies are having an unintended effect on the people cut off from their resources. Seems there are more pharmacy robberies, armed standoffs, etc in the last few years.
Let me get this right… so I don’t make another mistake;
All the problems plaguing Obama (Who has been in office almost four years) were caused by Bush, BUT all the problems plaguing Lepage (who has served in office for less than two years) are his doing?
Tell me, I just want to get this right.
BTW, before you sart stereotyping, 15 minutes ago I voted for Obama.
Lepage has nothing to do with it, what about Baldacci when he was in
The left-wing looney Orono faction has checked in. YYeah lady, LePage is to blame because Maine has nuts.
Jeeze!
It is nice to see that the news reported police tactics so everyone can see where they are dispersed.
Give him the pills, make em good and strong…he will surrender pretty easy after that.
I hope he realizes in time that life can be good.
Ooh, a mechanical robot. As opposed to that other kind.
Ben there are plenty of mindless human robots, and they are voting for liberals.
I’m over here doing some simple snark about the copywriting, and you’ve got to drag the election into it. Typical. (And also pretty weak.)
not weak truthful
That’s right, the Chinese made mechanical robot vote is definately going to Romney. People who work here in the USA however….
Man,you can’t make this stuff up ! A mechanical robot to deliver his percocet, haha….Right out of Mad Magazine.
What happened to the days when all the bad guy asked for was a cigarette.
Hey, look there Boy’s….another target for us to shoot and kill ! The lucky one gets a couple of days off with pay … Ahh!
….
Maine’s police sure are becoming experts at standoff situations. This is the second one this week….and it’s only Monday!
No Jobs, No Hopes, No Dreams=No Jobs, No Hopes, No Dreams.. What a web we weave when we shop cheap wally world products. This is not the end of the insanity, it is the beginning.. We need Factories that employ the less skilled. People will work the floor for 40 years and take care of their families if factories return,, The high tech jobs are for different demographics, who mostly drink micro brews, not pills
Easy now on the micro drinkers! LOL. I love my micros and I work with my hands. Misses likes that I love the micros too I think. It’s more expensive so I drink less of it. Not to mention I tend to try to drink from the Maine breweries so I can get away with telling her I’m doing my part to stimulate the local economy!
No the new P.C. is that everyone is to be a “college grad,” even if we must re-label facilities which used to be called “vocational schools.”
I think your timing is off, oronowoman- the general frustration has gone up since Obama. Unemployment up. Food Stamp usage up. Bankruptcies up. Gas prices up. (way up). Inflation (real inflation, including food, etc…) way up. American Credit Rating downgraded, on the level of several 2nd world nations. Homeownership way down. Percentage of taxpayers way down. Slowest ‘recovery’ in history. Job creation at lowest level since before WW2, not even close to keeping up with population growth and immigration. Government dependency way up.
Wages way down. Spend a little time reading the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Bank Credit Analyst, Financial Times, and a few other publications that are written above a 3rd grade level, and you’ll be able to sift through the propaganda you’ve been spoon fed. The only states with any measurable improvement are ones with Republican Governors. And before you jump on the ‘Bush did it!’ bandwagon, I’m sure you recall that all the bad things you probably wish to blame on him were all voted on, or railroaded through with the help of Senator Obama, while the Dems were in control.
Actually, gas prices are not up in the last four years. Before the bank crisis oil had risen to $147 a barrel. The national average for a gallon of gas in late July 2008 was $4.14 per gallon. The economic meltdown depressed demand so much that 6 months later oil had plummeted to $37 dollars a barrel. The national average for gas at the pump had fallen to $1.84. As soon as the recession hit bottom oil and gas prices climbed back to their previous levels as controlled by futures traders.
Just out of curiosity, these all powerful futures traders that you claim are controlling the price- using fundamental analaysis, do they control the supply side, or the demand side? There are also futures markets for gasoline, so why is there not a huge disconnect between WTI and RB, if these futures traders control the market?
The futures traders DO NOT control the market, but they do have a significant impact on prices.
I have not the time or inclination to educate you on the subject.
Good one! I can’t imagine how I’ve managed to make such a handsome living doing this all these years without your sage advice and ‘education’.
Nutter is obviously NUTS! They should check him into the Round House (Maison Ronde) as soon as possible. This guy could be a danger to others if they don’t do something with him now! And, all these nuts running around has nothing to do with the Governor…it’s global warming..stupid!
I am betting drugs are a big part of his problems. Clean up the substance abuse issues and surprise, surprise, the mental health tends to improve.
…and you base your theory on WHAT? Where pray tell has the “substance abuse issue been cleared up?”
I was referring to the demand that percs be brought to him while he was holding himself under seige in his Jeep. Maybe I am wrong, but I do not think that someone who did not have a drug issue would ask for that. Someone taking it as prescribed would have already taken their dose or had their meds with them. As I said, I could be wrong. I have been wrong before and I am sure that I will be again.
I was referring to substance abuse issues of individuals, not any particular location. When someone has a drug problem and is diagnosed with mental health issues as well, their mental health symptoms tend to subside when they become clean and sober.
This individual cost who knows how much of the taxpayers money by this action. Not to mention wages lost and business lost because businesses needed to be evacuated. Self-centered much? Maybe he needs help, but a dramatic stand-off with him waving his gun around and demanding drugs be delivered to him is not really showing me that. It is showing me that he believes the world needs to adjust to him and his wants.
He needs to repay the tax payers expense for all the cost involved.
Something needs to be done about these people that do this. Streets were shut down, businesses evacuated and lost sales all because a guy has a bad day. Why do the police spend so much time trying to reason with these people? If he didnt have a hostage, why not just shoot a canister of tear gas in and end it right off the bat? I am amazed at the ammount of firepower, manpower and time thrown into these standoffs, and at taxpayers expense.
Nutter, hmmm. Go figure.
yeah
