BRIDGTON, Maine — An elderly Casco woman was killed Monday morning in a head-on collision between her minivan and an oncoming school bus in Bridgton, police said.

Jacqueline Ingalls, 74, of Casco was pronounced dead at the scene of the Route 302 crash, in which police say a 1989 Plymouth minivan, traveling northbound, driven by Ingalls swerved into the path of the southbound school bus and crashed into it.

According to Bridgton Police Department Public Information Officer Georgiann Fleck, police do not know what caused Ingalls, who was the sole occupant of the van, to swerve.

The Lake Region School District, which serves Bridgton, announced that none of the four occupants of the minibus involved in the crash were seriously hurt. The bus was carrying three children and a bus driver at the time of the incident, and the district stated Monday morning that two students and the driver were treated for minor injuries at Bridgton Hospital and released.

The crash reportedly took place just after 7 a.m. Monday on Route 302, locally known as Portland Road. Because of the incident, a section of the road was closed between Burnham Road and Sandy Creek Road until about 10 a.m., with traffic being detoured down side roads.

The road is now open, according to Bridgton police. The crash remains under investigation and is being reconstructed by specialists from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

    1. What is wrong with the word elderly? It applies here and it is not insulting.
I’m elderly and fit, doesn’t bother me.

      1. Doesn’t bother me, either.  It’s a hell of a lot better than “senior citizen”, which is just plain awful.  I’ll be 73 soon and would rather be called old, because that’s what I am – old.

        1. I would get asked at stores if i was a senior  citizen an it never bothered me at all in fact i liked it .

          1. OK, I forgot about that, and I’ll make an exception for being a “senior citizen” in a store because it usually means I’m going to get a discount.

        2. My 77 yr old friend says there is no such thing as “the golden years”. I’m 57 and already starting to believe him! Old as ya feel. I remember my great grandfather, pipe in mouth, cutting stove wood at 91! Just don’t say “Oh, you’re just x number years young’. Patronizing and corny.

      2. When i work at BIW the crew i worked on i usted to get called old man all the time an i was like 60 then never bothered me a bit i would just give them a smile  or i would answed them

  1. My condolences to Ms. Ingalls family and friends.

Sympathies to the kids and bus driver. That must have been an awful thing to witness and endure. Hope everybody makes a full and quick recovery.

    1. I agree. Ms. Ingalls family didn’t have a chance to say goodbye, but from a medical emergency or the crash, most of us would rather go quickly. Still a shock for them all.

    1. Its the school’s fault! Ask Big Paulie.  He’ll tell you that the teacher’s association is the cause of this.
Seriously, as a fill in driver once in a while, my heart goes out to the kids, both drivers and their families.  It does show, at least in this case, that even without seat-belts, schools buses are pretty safe for the students, as long as they are seated.
