STANDISH, Maine — Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office investigators are considering whether to press charges against any of the drivers involved in a three-vehicle crash Friday in Standish that included a fully loaded school bus.

An SAD 6 bus carrying 34 children was stopped in the eastbound lane near 760 Ossipee Trail in Standish while dropping off a student around 3:30 p.m. Friday when the incident occurred, according to a sheriff’s office announcement Monday morning.

Kelly Eastman, 31, of Hiram was driving a 1997 Ford pickup truck in the westbound lane when she allegedly dropped a water bottle. While distracted trying to pick up the bottle, she allegedly rear-ended a westbound 2000 Subaru stopped in traffic out of respect for the bus, and her vehicle kept going, grazing the front end of the stopped bus.

The 2000 Subaru was being driven by Shawn Gervais, 37, of Waterboro, and the 2004 Bluebird SAD 6 bus was being driven by Gary Plumley, 56, of Standish.

Sheriff’s office investigator estimate that each vehicle involved in the crash received about $1,500 in damage.

Traffic in that section of Ossipee Trail was reduced to one lane for approximately 80 minutes Friday afternoon while emergency responders from Standish and Limington evaluated the situation and the area was cleaned up, according to the sheriff’s office Monday.

The sheriff’s office stated Monday morning that no occupants of the bus were hurt in the incident, and that charges are possible pending the completed outcome of the investigation.

  1. That person was probaboly texting with the other hand and had one eye on the phone and the other on the escaped bottle of water.  Glad no one was hurt this time.

  2. About 15 years ago, I was rear ended by a vehicle driven by a woman who dropped her cigarette. She never saw me stopped at the red light (or the red light apparently). She and her passenger got out of the vehicle holding drinks in glasses. I am betting it was not fruit punch. Then she didn’t want to trade papers because her license had her SS# (Mass Lic). Both of my little ones were in the back seat screaming. I explained if she did not exchange ins info, I would take her plate number and turn her in for hit and run. My six year old was complaining of neck pain while my three year old said he was fine, until they tried to move him at the hospital. He wanted to stay in the car and finally admitted to a “boo-boo” on his back.

Keep your eyes on the road. If you drop something pull over and retrieve it. Don’t risk hurting yourself or someone else.

How hard is it to determine that this woman’s poor decision-making led to this crash?

    1. A water bottle, really?  That’s the best she could come up with?  That is one important water bottle, must have been really thirsty.
