SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A woman handed over five dollars to a group of young men who reportedly had a gun in their vehicle in a Maine Mall parking lot Sunday, and police are investigating the incident.
South Portland police Sgt. Adam Howard said the woman, a mall employee, was in the parking lot near the Sears garden center retrieving something from her vehicle when a red Ford Mustang with four men in it pulled up.
“One of them called out to her and said they needed 75 cents for the tolls,” Howard said.
The woman was on her phone at the time, and the man who asked for the money repeated his request, Howard said.
When the woman looked inside the Mustang, she saw one of the men handling what appeared to be a handgun, the sergeant said.
“She construed that to be a threat and gave them five dollars and they left,” Howard said.
The men are described as being in their late teens to early 20s, but police don’t have any other information on them, Howard said. The parking lot does have video surveillance, however.
“We are awaiting a further check of video from one of the stores at the mall,” Howard said.

The woman saw “one of the men handling what appeared to be a handgun”…..really, it was either a gun or it was, well if not then who knows?? My wife saw a “moose” the other day while I was driving and after I turned around and went back we both watched her moose…..a stump off the side of the road….
usually handguns are black, and the politically correct media clearly can’t say that word
so it may have been a “…” handgun, and they may have been in their early 20’s.
If they can afford a red Mustang they can probably afford to pay their own tolls.

it was probably someone she knew anyway. people are so dramatic. if someone were going to rob someone at gunpoint they are not going to ask for 75 cents for crying out loud. this is the most ridiculous story i have read. today anyway.

Good God! Why would this woman believe she was being threatened? No one’s ever asked her for money before? Believe it or not a similar thing happened with my son a few years back. He pulled into a Cumberland Farms for a soda. One of his friends sitting in the car had one of those BB guns that look like a pistol. An older couple saw it lying on the sat of the car as they got into their car and called the police. Before my son knew it he and his friend were on the ground face first with his hands behind his head. After some tense, humiliating moments the police figured it out and let him go. Now, I agree better safe then sorry but I also would like to point out that not every teenage kid who wears his cap backwards and his pants around his butt is a criminal. They could be honor students trying to fit in.
This article is pretty vague. Seems more like the woman imagined some kind of threat and forked over five bucks, and then got all in a frenzy about it and called the cops afterward. According to the article nobody pointed a weapon at her, mentioned having one or threatened her. Strange.
