CORINTH – Philip Averton Small, 89, passed away Nov. 1, 2012, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Oct. 20, 1923, in Monticello, the son of Benjamin T. Small and Etta (Bulley) Small.
Philip attended Exeter schools and graduated from Brewer High School. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe with the 571st Anti Aircraft Artillery Unit and operated the Anti-Aircraft Half-Track. He was discharged Feb. 13, 1946. Phil worked many years for Beacon Realty and Beacon Auto Body, retiring in 1985. He married Vera E. Salls, July 29, 1946, and they were married for 57 years until her passing in 2003. Phil spent many years fishing with Vera in their canoe, “The Happy Hooker.”
Phil is survived by his son, Ronald P. Small and his wife, Sandy, of Corinth; daughter, Susan J. Roncek of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, Quentin Small and wife, Marie, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Douglas Roncek, Jennifer Roncek and Andrea Roncek, all of Omaha, Neb.; brother, Millage and wife, Bertha, of Groton, Conn.; brother, Kirk Small of Bangor; sister, Heather Pelkey of Bangor; great-grandchildren, Damien, Selina, Cameron and Ayanna Small; stepgrandchildren, Ross Nason and wife, Tammy, Melodi Bell and husband, Jesse, Philip Miller and Andrea Miller; many nieces and nephews; and special family friends, Pat and Jerry Jubinville. Phil will be greatly missed by Grampy’s good dog, Kiwi. He was predeceased by two brothers, Merrill and Roger; two sisters, Dean and Mary Alice; and a grandson, Cameron Kirk Small.
A reception will be held 1-3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Snow Mobile Club, Route 15, Corinth. Interment will be at a later date. Those who wish to make a special contribution in Phil’s memory may donate to their favorite cause. Arrangements by Memorial Alternatives, 205 Center St., Bangor.
