CARIBOU, Maine — An early morning two-vehicle accident on Van Buren Road has claimed the life of a New Sweden man.

Matthew Turnbull, 23, of New Sweden was traveling south just before 6 a.m. Thursday in a 2000 GMC Sierra when he collided with a northbound 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Edmond St. Pierre, 48, of Caribou, according to information released by Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan.

Both drivers were transported by ambulance to Cary Medical Center where Turnbull was pronounced dead, Gahagan said in the release.

St. Pierre was treated for his injuries at the hospital and his condition is unknown.

Road conditions at the time of the accident were described by Gahagan as icy and unsanded and the accident remains under investigation by Matthew Cummings of the Caribou Police Department assisted by officer Jason Matheson.

Also assisting at the accident were members of the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department and the Maine Warden Service.

Hope this will be a lesson to all to slow down and drive careful on the unpredictable roads in the county and thus his death will not be in vain because it will most likely save many other lives. 7. The next time you’re driving in bad weather, slow down, and remember this young man. It could save your life.

    1. what i don’t understand is that people make assumptions that matt was going to fast? how can they do that unless they were there. alan and lynn may god be with you to help you through this and he will. our sincere sympathies to you and your families.

      1. Not sure why my comment got flagged.  It said   “the next time you are driving in bad weather, slow down, and remember this young man.”

I assume that is what your comment is referring to.  I did not state that this man was driving fast I am just saying that the slower you drive in bad weather the less likely you will be in an accident and we all need to be safe out there on the roads.

      2. People assume that he was driving too fast because excessive speed is the cause of nearly all crashes on slippery roads.

  8. To my little brother,

You have brought so many smiles to everyone who loves you very much. When I found out this mourning during my work hrs, I cried with many tears down my cheek and couldn’t focus not knowing why I wasn’t there to keep you safe, make you laugh, say “I Love You”, tell you that I miss you. Everyday, I regret not being there for you and being self fish for leaving the family behind, I want to say I”m sorry for everything, not being there for your birthday, holidays, and not being there with you to cherish every moment to remember. You are in a better place now, I will never forget you, you are in my heart. I Love You Very Much, my little brother!

    1. Sem, sweetie, you’re not selfish for moving away; it’s just doing what you need to do to live your life! Your family is still there and you love them, as they do you. This is a hard time and you’re bound to have these sort of feelings but you should know that you are a good and decent person as well. I wish you peace — cousin Laurie

    2. You’re grieving and may not be thinking rationally right now.  My cousin’s wake is tonight.  Only 55 and passed suddenly.  She felt terribly guilty about “moving away” from the county,  and I did as well, but over time we realized we had to do what was right for us.  Don’t beat yourself up and focus on happy memories.   So sorry for your loss.

  9. Matthew was a fun, kind, family loving young man who was Livin’ the Dream. For those of us who are blessed to have loved him, be loved by him or know him, are richer in spirit. May his memory live on within the hearts and souls of his family who he loved so deeply. May God Bless you and keep you in the comfort of his arms Lynn, Alan, Seth , Joshua and Sarah as you grieve the loss of Matthew.
