SULLIVAN, Maine — A Franklin man is facing charges after he allegedly showed up outside another person’s house with blood all over his face and then tried to force his way inside, according to police.
The incident happened around 4 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, Hancock County Deputy Sheriff Chris Thornton indicated in a report summary. The caller told police that a man with blood covering his face was banging on the side of his house on Taunton Drive and trying to get inside.
Thornton said Thursday that the man told the caller his name was Edward Fowler. Fowler, 20, apparently had been at a party across the town line in Franklin when he drove off in his girlfriend’s car, Thornton said. Why Fowler left the party is not clear, he added.
Fowler ended up crashing the car, rolling it onto its roof just after he turned off Taunton Drive onto Porcupine Lane, according to Thornton. The car, a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am, was demolished in the crash, he said.
Fowler then is accused of going to multiple nearby houses, calling out the names of people he supposedly had been at the party with, the deputy said. He said county emergency dispatchers received five calls from people in the neighborhood woken up by the commotion.
Fowler then settled on one nearby home and tried repeatedly to get inside, Thornton said, though he did not know the people who live there. Residents in the house had woken up from the sound of a car horn outside and then called police as Fowler allegedly was using a rock to try to break through the window on the front door, the deputy said.
Fowler also is accused of breaking a window of a van parked outside, of damaging a railing, and of trying to force his way into a mobile home on the property that is used for storage, Thornton said.
He said Fowler then disappeared but, five minutes after a deputy arrived at the scene, the officer saw the man crawling out from under a nearby deck and told him to stop.
Fowler allegedly ran into the nearby woods instead. After being called to assist, the Ellsworth Police Department canine unit soon found him hiding in the woods, according to Thornton.
Fowler was taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth for injuries including a “significant” laceration under his left eye and a broken front tooth, the deputy sheriff said. Fowler is believed to have injured himself both when he allegedly crashed the car and when he allegedly tried to break into the house.
After being treated at the hospital, Fowler was taken to Hancock County Jail a few blocks away. He is facing charges of operating a motor vehicle after suspension, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants, and criminal mischief, according to Thornton.
The deputy sheriff said police are waiting for the results of a blood alcohol test taken at the hospital. He said Fowler has since bailed out of jail on $1,000 unsecured cash.

Homeowner….protect yourself! What is going on around here? Drugs, alcohol. Are we safe in our own homes anymore?
Are WE safe in OUR homes? Hmm, speaking for the Homeowners association or what, Fred? LOL “WE” who? Got a mouse in your pocket? LOL This ain’t been Andy Of Mayberry for quite a while now, tho there seems to be some Folks pretty slow on the uptake about it.
Nice boyfriend lady.
I mean ex-boyfriend.
After terrorizing the neighborhood, they let this nut job out of jail for only $1,000 dollars? Nice way to make the community feel safe.
Agreed, I wonder if there were any young children or elderly people in the five homes that were privileged to witness this bloody, screaming, window smashing spectacle at 4:00 AM? Maybe they thought he could not come up with the 1k.
Not a word about killing the disoriented bleeding guy yet! Don’t get all civilized now, ought to be a half-dozen posts here about giving him a ‘double tap’ a .44 magnum — may not be a lot left for the 2nd tap though. A 12 ga buck shot at center mass, or maybe an AR 15s stitching him like a zipper. Geeze. Call 911 and the cops was the better way to go — “Hey, ah-yup, there’s a bleeding fella banging on my house and talking to himself. Nope, not a neighbor or relative. Best come get him…” LOL
at least this one stayed outside……cant shoot em in the yard……
Yeah, but you can always drag em into the house……………………
get the hose get rid of the blood/drag trail ? Yup……not a good plan…..lol
Now there’s an honest man. LOL You go, Johny!
So very true. This man’s safety is the main priority.
Nice theory, all depends how ‘this man’ acts. I was just taking a little jab at the over-enthused gun guys — the land mines would’ve got him long before all that. LOL This mans safety is a priority UNTIL it becomes a choice between that and mine or those I love. Self-preservation is a very strong instinct.
Agreed, protecting the weak and innocent is far more of a priority. (I was being somewhat sarcastic.) I’ve heard of people shooting thieves as they fled with their lawn furniture though. You have to weigh things like if taking a human life justifiable to you, your local DA, and to a jury of you peers. I’ve also heard it costs roughly 85K these days on average to defend yourself after shooting an intruder, even in a simple case. Having the police drag this idiot off unhurt is the best possible outcome for all.
do you get your information from the brady campaign website?
it doesn’t cost you anything to go before a judge for a castle doctrine hearing.
Oh, I’m not anti-gun. I’m a gun club member and shoot trap and target shoot regularly. I’ve heard most of these stories from other members. You really would not want any hearing without a lawyer defending you. If you were to kill someone you would most likely face suits from their family etc. What I’m saying is if you can avoid having to kill someone, you are far better off in a lot of ways. If it is necessary, so be it.
you too funny !!! lol
It’s a wonder he didn’t get shot. I know if someone was breaking into my home by smashing a window he would be looking down the barrel of my Glock.
