Maine and the nation have a growing percentage of minority voters, and failing to recognize their needs could mean a slow decline for the Republican Party. Every four years, the nonwhite portion of the country’s electorate increases by 2 percent. In 30 years, nonwhites are set to outnumber whites. Nationally, between 2008 and 2011 any gains Republican made were only among white voters, according to the Pew Research Center. These facts alone should cause the GOP to figure out how to broaden its base.

So far, despite attempts by some, the party has not helped itself. One example arose this week when outgoing Maine Republican Party Chairman Charlie Webster returned to voter-fraud conspiracies and made shameful comments — that he acknowledged cast “aspersions on an entire group of Americans” — that “dozens of black people” who were unfamiliar to municipal officials may have voted on Nov. 6 in rural Maine towns. Even though he later apologized, his focus on race and supposed voter fraud is indicative of a larger problem within the party. Webster may have retracted his remarks about African-Americans, but he continued to push for restrictions on voters: He said the state should require voter IDs and continued to question why college students are allowed to cast ballots in the town where they get their education.

Hasn’t this country determined that focusing on supposed voter fraud is a waste of time and resources and pushes away some of the very voters the GOP needs? After the Republican National Lawyers Association made allegations about several hundred cases of voter impersonation fraud, a reporting project called News21 investigated each case. It found no evidence of fraud. The reporters went on to request information from every state about every reported case of alleged election fraud. They found 10 related to impersonation during the last decade, making the frequency of poll impersonation one in 15 million.

The harm of voter ID laws appears to outweigh the benefit. Many studies show that people of color, the poor and the elderly possess IDs at much lower rates than whites. The Brennan Center for Justice states that requiring voter IDs disenfranchises up to 10 percent of eligible voters. Republican leaders, such as Pennsylvania GOP House Majority Leader Mike Turzai, have admitted publicly that voter ID laws will help Republicans.

Maine is familiar with voter fraud allegations and attempts to make voting more difficult. In June 2011, Gov. Paul LePage signed a law to ban same-day voter registration. A citizen’s veto referendum overturned the measure in November 2011, exhibiting state residents’ desire to preserve their right to register to vote on Election Day. In a separate but related matter, in July 2011, Webster produced a list of 206 names of college students who he said should be investigated for voter fraud. An investigation revealed no evidence of fraud.

Yet, this week Maine found itself again forced to face claims about a problem that doesn’t really exist. Municipal workers did not make complaints to the Office of the Secretary of State, but Webster still suggested that the high number of new voter registrations in Bangor was possible evidence of voter irregularities. He also questioned why Maine allows college students to vote in the towns where they attend school. (The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1979 that college students can register to vote using a dormitory address).

The Republican Party — in Maine and the country — must realize that pursuing voter suppression tactics is not helping their cause. This is not the time to try to block votes. This is the time to try to win over pockets of the Democratic Party and a greater share of moderate, independent voters. Of course, many Republicans recognize this. The candidates for Maine Legislature leadership positions this week emphasized the importance of expanding the party and appealing to more women and young people. But they must back up their words with action.

One big change must be to genuinely be more welcoming on a broad scale, which requires a change of heart. There are policy areas where Republicans may be able to succeed, too. In Maine, it might involve taking back the message about the benefits of charter schools. Nationally, it could involve proposing an immigration solution that ensures businesses have access to the workers they need, while keeping borders secure.

It is clearly unacceptable for the leader of any political party to make allegations about black voters without proof. “Mr. Webster’s unsubstantiated and unverifiable allegations of voter fraud based upon race are offensive and insulting, not only to the members of Maine’s African-American community, but to all citizens of Maine,” said Rachel Talbot Ross, state director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Maine. “His statements reveal what voters have known through this past election cycle: that racism is at the heart of the voter suppression movement.”

Instead of putting energy into allegations of voter fraud and trying to put out public relations fires caused by leadership, the party would do better to figure out how to be more inclusive. By failing to do so, the GOP only swindles itself.

  1. What exactly are the “needs” of minority voters???…….and how do those “needs” differ from those of all voters???

      1. I side with the Dems on most stuff…….but again, can someone explain the “needs” of minority voters (preferably someone that actually wrote the opinion piece)???

        1. A small start for black people might be to not have themselves treated with suspicion for simply being black.

          1. Maybe if 15% of the population didn’t commit 50% of the violent crime in this country they would be looked at differently.

        2. I would like to know the latest classification of MINORITY. With the cost of living going through the roof, I think I am in the Minority. IF this has to do about a persons skin color, then those who spout racial rant should soak their heads in the toilet bowl.

      2. I resent your putting all Republicans under the same roof. It is NOT true.
It is comments like yours that inflame negativity and that Gopher IS part of the Good Old Days.

  2. Charlie may have apologized for his overtly prejudiced remarks but also said he’d not do his post card gimmick. However, a subsequent article says he’s going to do it anyway even though it’s futile. I don’t think that the USPO has any obligation to return an undeliverable postcard. What’s more, several of the voter could have moved since the election and post cards aren’t always forwarded. He has no trust for local election officials even for those with R poll watchers in attendance. We’d love to know the origin of his phantom message on alleged irregularities, if it exists that is..

    1. And once again a questions pop into my head. How does Charlie know how these mystery voters voted? Are they all registered Democrats? Did they vote the straight ticket? How would he know that if the votes are all annonomus? Or is it just the fact that these people had the temerity to exercise their constitutional rights that has Webster and the rest of the radical right Republicans upset?

      1. Excellent point. The head of the Maine GOP assumed no black person would vote Republican. Quite a campaign strategist.

        1. You don’t suppose it had anything to do with the fact that nationwide, 92% of black voters voted Obama , do you?

          1. That’s not 0%. Charlie just wants to ensure it is. It’s the same stupid campaign mindset as Romney’s 47% comment. And that’s only part of the reason it’s stupid. Excluding themselves down to fat cats, religious zealots, gun nuts, and racists is what todays GOP does best.

          2. Yes, just keep up the limited understanding you have. Young people went for Obama in large numbers, women, including single women, suburban women with educations, Latino people, white men out in Ohio and the midwest voted for him in high numbers this time.
You show why your side lost.

  3. What’s worse than Old Dumb Charlies racist delusions is the silence from prominent Maine republicans.

    None have condemned him.

    Yessah

      1. The statue of Liberty is a wonderful symbol of how welcoming this country is ….inclusive. Those who would use such a symbol for their username should know what that Statue of Liberty stands for.

          1. Yes, you show how little you know. I know what the Statue of Liberty stands for. I have been there and inside of it. I highly doubt you have.

    1. They hardly ever exhibit any courage. They do not have the courage of their convictions. Or else , those are their convictions (i.e. racist ) Or they thought they were helping themselves by not speaking out. (political expediency.) Has that ever come back and smacked them in the face.
It is right that some of these leaders who would harm citizens by their words or action , are getting their comeuppance.
      Yup!

      1. Links or it didn’t happen Naran…. frankly your reputation isn’t much better than Charlie’s…..

  4. Well lets cut em some slack. It’s like listening to loud music in the car and not noticing how loud it’s been until you get back in the very next day. With LePage at their helm the whole party has been a bit desensitized to numbness…until the next day or perhaps day after an election.

  5. Shame is not part of the Republican Platform. Charlie Webster is just the Maine representative of a nationwide Republican effort to supress voter participation.

    1. Rachel Maddow laid that out quite nicely but also noted that those who do these kinds of things are now being asked to step down. The rise of the RINOs?

      1. We also need some DINOs. Hopefully, somewhere down the line both parties learn from this cycle of obstructionism. Neither set of extremeist are doing a service for our country.

        1. DINOs were called “Blue Dogs” and the TP targeted them two years ago and won most of their seats. Makes one wonder even more about TP motives.

          1. No, if you look into it the Blue Dogs named themselves. And, hold some power in their collective body. Give me some links to prove Ds cannibalize them. Have not been aware of that. Certainly have not heard the term Democrats In Name Only.

  6. Does anyone really expect the Maine Republican Party to change the way they do business or more importantly the way they think. This is a party who had the closest thing to a lock on a US Senate seat possible but were getting ready to unseat Olympia Snowe simply because she didn’t measure up 100 percent to their radical right ideology. She was termed by the radical right wing of the Maine Republican Party as a RINO because she did not march in lockstep to their failed ideology. It was better to not get any pie in their minds then it was to get 70-80 percent. The result is that Angus King is now the US Senator elect from Maine. We saw the same thing happen in Indiana with Senator Richard Lugar, he had held the US Senate seat since 1976 but , like Snowe, was considered a Rino by that State’s tea party controlled Republican Party. He was outed in the Republican Primary for a more acceptable “conservative” candidate who ended up losing in the general election. For years the radical right wing of the Maine Republican Party has been running candidates who were ultra conservative and ended up losing in the general election. They never came to terms with the simple fact that no matter how ideologically pure a candidate might be if he or she can not win in the general election then you get none of the pie. All one has to do is read the message boards in the BDN to get a feel for the way the radical right still thinks. Even after suffering one of the worst defeats at the polls in Maine history the tea party posters are still singing the same old song of doom and gloom. To hear them tell it Maine voters are stupid. Maine voters are all lazy and want hand outs. They claim to have all the answers which really are not answers at all but simplistic solutions to complex problems. Cut taxes, cut taxes, cut taxes. Cut spending, well at least cut spending when it comes to people at least. If it has to do with their pet projects like a feasibility study for a privately owned road they are all for spending Mainer’s money. One thing is for certain. If the Maine Republican Party continues to be run by the radical right wing of the party the Democrats will run the State for another 20, 30 or 40 years.

    1. now are you really saying that having the democrats “run the State for another 20,30 or 40 years” is really a good thing?

short memory, very short memory if what we have received from the “leadership” of the democrats in the past is now deemed as being what the State of Maine needs to survive and flourish again ………the citizens of Maine need to demand better from all our “representatives” in government.

    2. you are absolutely right…I mean look at what the Democrats did when they lose elections….they embrace lower taxes, relief for businesses, allowing estates to keep more of thier money, energy independence for the lowering of energy prices….protecting the safety net of low income diabled and they elderly and retirees…no wait….no they dont….they double down on thier socialist agenda and push forward…

      1. You do realize that what your doing is called trolling?
        From wiki
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3″
But I think most of us knew that already. The one difference between a regular troll and you is…… instead of under a bridge you live in the bat cave on AMG. We all know what fills a bat cave, bat sh _ _ and you aren’t Batwoman.

        1. She has run out of anything to say that anyone will believe…. but she has always sniped in to stir it up.. it is what she does… hell it is sort of what I do.. I enjoy challenging Naran and her cohorts to de3fedn their positions… they rarely do, but I feel someone must do it… and apparently so do you.. thanks.. it all helps to pull off the sheet.

  7. No voter ID laws definitely help the Democrats. What is wrong with requiring people to show a photo ID when voting? Simply put, it would not allow the influx of illegals to register the day of the election.
The author states: “people of color, the poor and the elderly possess ID’s @ a much lower rate than whites,” indicating that the poor and elderly mentioned are not white!

    1. Please show any proof that “No voter ID laws definitely help the Democrats.” You are spouting an opinion that has no facts to support it. I might as well say that Eating Twinkies makes people vote republican.

        1. And this proves what, dear, exactly?
That right wing states that passed voter ID laws also vote right wing in the presidential election?
Or that voter ID laws prevented enough Democrats and Independants from legally voting so that, against national trends, President Obama lost those states?
Or that there are bus loads of hundreds of illegal law breaking (invisable) blacks traveling around Aroostook County and other counties with no voter ID law and throwing the election to President Obama?

          Let’s hear your theory. I’ll bet it’s a beaut.

        2. Naran… you are still speaking… right and that proves?? what?

It proves nothing Naran… I could just as easily say those are the States that have foisted Voter Suppression on their citizens, like you and your buddies tried here in Maine and say that is why Romney won.. I have just as much proof as you…….. but that cat is out of the Bag Naran… there isn’t voter fraud of the kind you see, but there certainly is the kind your party tried to accomplish, with massive voter suppression campaigns all over the country…

Bah.. pox on you are yours for trying such underhanded crap while at the same time accusing me and everyone else in the country of busing Negroes around…

Please do keep on the path you are on, it is the best thing that can happen.. please do not learn from this election, so that in two years we can remove even more misguided GOP members.

Naran, perhaps you should review the results…. Obama won by a margin greater than the voterID fraud you suggest could account for and by a larger margin than anyone since FDR…

You divisive antics and the Lance juggernaut is petering out… the lies and innuendo and half truths you’ve been spouting won;t hold ground anymore… those you have fooled into thinking the way they do are seeing they have been lied to in an attempt for you backers to gain political ground… all the crap foisted by the Conservative media ( basically FOX) has been porven to be just that… crap… twisted half truths and propoganda.. not for any good purpose, but for power… you’re a fool for them and you don;t even know it…

        1. Yes but if one leaves these accusations hanging without challenging them, they and others feel they are valid… we need to challenge these “propagandist” echoes and talking points, because they become facts in the minds of some…

The misinformation campaign by the GOP has been very successful… of course it is feeding complete BS to people dumb enough to believe it… sigh….

    2. The photo ID requirement is unnecessary because there is no influx of illegal voters or evidence of voter fraud and wrong because it burdens those registered voters without a photo I.D.

      1. Those who lost this election (their candidate) are very frustrated and are still looking at all the wrong things and still don’t see why their party lost. They will continue to lose if they don’t get in touch with certain realities. I guess they felt if they could suppress voting they might have had a chance. Even then, I don’t think they would have won. It is sad that the only way you feel you can vote is to make it harder for people to vote. People stood for hours in long lines just to vote. That is the inspiring thing to take from election day. But, these people (like the one you replied to ) just don’t “get it.” Doesn’t sound very promising for them.

    3. I think before voting we should require voters to run around the block three times and do twenty push ups. Anyone so unpatriotic that they’re unwilling to do this shouldn’t be allowed to vote.

This will discourage voter fraud…and, by coincidence, it will reduce Republican voting because the average age of a Republican is somewhere north of 55.

    4. Why? Because THAT would cause MORE legitimate people to be shut out from voting than are accused of voter fraud… Haven’t you been paying attention? My god, there is no voter fraud in this country…

    5. Because I proved who I am when I registered and in doing so proved to my municipality that I indeed have the RIGHT to vote there. When I state my name I am who I say I am until someone can prove otherwise. I am innocent until proven guilty. Only when you can prove me guilty of fraud can you take my vote away. The burden of proof must be placed on the accuser not the accused.

        1. You just made my point quite clear. If I WANT something from an business/organization I will have to abide by their rules. But I can choose to walk away. To impose such a requirement on a registered voter is placing obstacles in their way on their way to the polls. But you and I will disagree on this until the cows come home. It won’t happen this year. Ds won’t stand for it. Thank goodness.

        2. You don’t have a right to a particular bank account or particular library card. You do have a right to a particular vote (your own). Does that help you understand the the fallacy in your argument?

    6. When voters register, they DO have to show ID under current law. Your notions of voter fraud are absolutely absent of ANY basis in fact, are entirely delusional, and your voter suppression tactics are only making people further HATE the TeaPublican Party. Your party is dying a slow but certain death. Keep up this NONSENSE. Just keep it up. You got CRUSHED in the election last week, your outgoing Chairman is a pathetic JOKE, your governor’s days are severely numbered, and your party is OLD, WHITE, SHRINKING, and LOST in a bubble of radical hate-filled NONSENSE because you people drink up the IDIOCY you hear all day on FAKE NEWS and the RushLimpmind show. You people better understand what happened to you in this election and wake up. It wasn’t anything that was done TO you, it was a political SUICIDE that you people did to YOURSELVES.

      1. Your writing is laced with insult and sarcasm. If I do not read it carefully, I would think that you are one of Limbaugh’s Dittoheads. Or, are you just giving them a taste of their own medicine?

  8. I’m waiting for an explanation from some Republican about how the Republican Party Chairman, speaking for the party, fabricating dozens of law-breaking black people roaming rural Maine isn’t racist.

How do you get more racist than that? I’d like to know.

    Really. I would.

What sports caster, what news anchor, what…. anything but Maine Republican Chairman would continue five minutes longer in thier job if they said such a thing?

    1. PS Maine’s Republican Party Chairman Charlie – the blacks are out to get us – Webster rated a mention in Gail Collins’ regular column in today’s New York Times.

Yet another worldwide embarassment of Maine at the hands of a Republican leader.

  9. Attempts at voter suppression and the hysteria about voter fraud were a major factor in the Republican defeats nationwide. Why would you vote R if you were made to stand in line for 7 hours or more simply to exercise your constitutional right to vote?

    1. Many voters in this country stood in line for 6 hours or more just to vote. It was that important to them. It is so laughable ( no, shameful) when a person like Romney minimizes that . (“gifts”,etc.) He should be ashamed of himself. This country was saved by that individual not being elected!

  10. Anyone who thinks that there is no voter fraud would have to have an IQ below 70! And, looking at the preponderance of those who are resisting means to protect the vote from fraud certainly tells which party is benefiting most from existing fraud!

That said; I surely hope the next head of the Maine Republican party will be better at thinking before speaking!

    1. I KNOW it is more likely you would be hit by lightning than have someone steal your vote by voter impersonation, hence, no significant voter fraud that isn’t already caught by existing laws and practices and my IQ is significantly higher than 70…. You would do well to follow your own advice before commenting…! Even the Bush Admin studied the issue and found NO significant voter fraud…. My god, give it up… That horse is dead, dead, dead… no amount of beating it will change that fact…

    2. There is no voter fraud. It must be that your IQ is too low for you to grasp that reality. It has been proven. It is miniscule….miniscule. This is not anything that needs to have money and attention invested in it. Get over it.

    3. You mean the sheriffs and judges down south who were buying votes? That is about all that is reported by the Justice Department as documented fraud.

    4. WHERE IS YOUR EVIDENCE???? Please, please, please keep up your DELUSIONAL and BASELESS nonsense on this issue. It will ensure that the TeaPublicans continue to be SMASHED into OBLIVION for generations to come.

  11. Webster’s paranoia, and his party’s, is based on a distrust of government. It is ideological and it denigrates both government and our laws. Election wardens do a fantastic job running the elections that take place in each polling station. From what I have seen in my five decades these dedicated volunteers take their jobs very seriously, are civic minded to their very core, are an example of what is RIGHT about this country. For people like Webster, or the Republican Party, Charlie Summers included as he has pushed for unnecessary, ideologically driven changes to voting laws in Maine (laws I might add written up by ALEC/corporate interests), to denigrate these civic minded people, and the voters that take the time out of their days to vote is unconscionable. They should be ashamed, and I bet not a few republicans are these days… If they are not, they certainly should be. Charlie Webster is an embarrassment to Maine. Charlie Summers is as well for pushing to ALEC-inspired legislation that is designed, much like the gerrymandering and district redrawing that the House republicans benefit from, to benefit special interests… in this case, the party of corporate and wealthy Americans.

  12. Are we forgetting that this is the same guy that called off the primary vote in one Ron Paul friendly County becuase of “snow”?? He called the results with only 84% counted. Charlie Cheater is famous throughout the country. He assisted the National Party in disenfranchising the Maine delegation. We know you Charlie. We did not forget.

  13. I worked at the polls on election day, we had nearly 800 people register to vote that day in our small town. The new voters had only two issues on their mind, Obama and same sex marriage. They are not invested in their community. I witnessed people bringing in packages sent to their present address. I too am very suspicious of these self serving, uninvolved citizens.

You got what you wanted, but don’t complain if it doesn’t work out for you. Remember I have every right to bring up this issue every year to have it repealed by the voters because eventually people will see that same sex attraction is aberrant behavior and asking, “what were we thinking when we allowed it”.

As far as Obama, remember Richard Nixon, he won by a landslide and left office in disgrace. The truth will come out regarding Obama’s mishandling of Benghazi.

    1. “The new voters had only two issues on their mind, Obama and same sex marriage. They are not invested in their community.”
First, your post would be more credible if you told us your town.
Second, how would you know that 800 new voters had only those two issues on their mind? Maybe it is different here in Bangor, but when I go to the polls, it’s a simple “Name?” I give my name. My address is confirmed. I get my ballots, I vote, I insert my ballots into the counter, and that’s it. Even when it was the end of the day and there were no lines to get ballots, I didn’t see any chit-chat between poll workers and voters. (And there shouldn’t be.)
Third, there can be no denying that the presidential election and Question 1 were the big items on the ballot. It’s a GOOD THING something prompted new voters to come out.
Fourth, to suggest that Obama supporters and Question 1 supporters aren’t “invested in their community” is an insult to those voters. If they weren’t invested in their community, they wouldn’t have cared enough to vote for what they believe is best for the state and the nation.

      1. Get over yourself. It is not just about you and what you believe. Voting is a right and many exercised that right on election day. Many people who many not agree with many of your views. So what!

    2. Gee, you people just don’t get the message do you? You just suffered a CRUSHING defeat, and now you are doubling down on the very FOOLISH and DELUSIONAL kind of rhetoric that made sure you got CRUSHED at the polls last week, and DESERVEDLY SO! And you will continue to be CRUSHED. First, if you had any sense you’d be happy that people came out and participated in the political process. This is GOOD for DEMOCRACY (gee, remember that, Democracy??). Next, how dare you stereotype people like this. You don’t know how each and every person voted. And if people voted on the issues they most cared about, THAT is THEIR choice and YOU have NOTHING to say about it. Next, who people choose to love and marry is THEIR business. TeaPublicans are such HYPROCRITES. It is so DISGUSTING. TeaPubs stand their with their big mouths and rant about “liberty and freedom” and then whine and moan when people vote for LIBERTY AND FREEDOM. And as to morality, the TeaPublicans are awash in ethnocentrism, RACISM, hate of the poor, never saw a tax cut for a billionaire they didn’t jump for joy over, are deeply in love with WARS (gee, how many people did Jesus bomb??), and are the MOST IMMORAL bunch of fools anyone could imagine. Finally, give up your BASELESS NONSENSE over Benghazi, another bucket of delusional VOMIT courtesy of FAKE NEWS. There was no conspiracy about anything, anymore than when 200 marines were blown apart in Lebanon under your big hero Reagan, or when 3000 Americans were killed on 9/11 under your other hero the numb Bushie. So keep up your delusional nasty nonsense. It only ensures that your sad little TeaBaby TeaWhiner Party will continue to be SMASHED to PIECES in the future.

        1. By the way how is your parties Benghazi smear working out???? I hear 5 of 8 “R” lawmakers MISSED or DISSED the hearing with Petraeus, can this be true???????

      1. Nixon was forced from office in 1974. later that year the Democrats made massive gains in the House and Senate. In ’76 they took the presidency. It was said at the time that the R party was on it’s way out… BUT as usual the Democrats snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, and in ’78 the R party took the Senate, unseating some long term Democrats, and two years later they took the Presidency with a landslide of electorial votes winning in notorious liberal enclaves like San Francisco, New York, and Massachusetts.

In fact the Carter Mondale ticket won only five States. The Republicans took 10 Senate seats from the Democrats, but the Democrats were not able to wrest any from the Republicans. .The same year the Dems lost 34 house seats to the Republicans. This was six years after the biggest Republican rout in US history.

    3. You folks just refuse to hear the message that was sent to you loud and clear. People are telling you time and time again that those words and feelings are what lost the election for the GOP!

    4. Unless those 800 people *only* marked their ballots for Obama and same-sex-marriage and left the rest blank, they were actively part of the community.

I am getting pretty tired of Republicans proclaiming that anyone who doesn’t think like them or vote like them is self-serving. I have no kids but keep voting to raise my taxes for schools in my area (not Maine); I am a home owner and receive no government hand outs, but I voted for Obama; I am not gay, but the last time our state had a same-sex-marriage amendment, I voted for it. How self-serving am I? Seems to me it is people like you who are self-serving. “Gays are icky, don’t make them happy!” “I want all my money, vote for Ebenezer Scrooge.” “Abortion is against my religion, don’t let anyone have one.”

Lastly, the fact that these people bothered to register and vote at all *makes* them involved citizens.

        1. I thought of that, but I am sure letstrythisagain is simply making assumptions about the new voter’s intentions based on his personal fears…which I’m guessing is mostly “gays”.

    5. I hope the clerk in your municipality follows through to check all those new registrations with the state voter database. As a resident, you have standing to ask whether the clerk has pursued the follow-up procedure.

    6. The only way a poll worker could know for a fact how 800 people voted would involve looking at individual ballots knowing who cast them.
      .
      That is a felony.

  14. I have a question regarding voter ID how do people board a plane, travel by train or bus? I always have to show ID so what’s the big deal about showing ID?

    1. If I WANT something from a business and they require an ID then I have a choice. I can provide an ID or I can leave without whatever it is I thought I wanted. I do not HAVE to show an ID. In Maine I have the right to vote. http://www.maine.gov/sos/cec/elec/right.htm and once properly registered no one has the right to deny me that.

    2. You are right. I use bed and breakfasts because they don’t require ID but hotels and motels do. I don’t fly, take a bus, or cross borders. The Demnocrats and the Republicans have teamed up to restrict my freedom as a US citizen and I resent it.
0n September 12, 2001, George W. Bush said “These terrorists attacked us because they hate our way of life. they hate our freedom,’ Then he stepped off the podium and began removing freedoms from US citizens. He did NOT close our southern border, he did NOT attempt to remove people who were in this Country illegally, and he did not change the student visa system which allowed 15 of the 19 terrorists on the 9-11 planes into the USA.
The message form our government, that I got loud and clear, is that on 9-11 the terrorists won. they changed us.

  15. Fact #1. Maine has 4 electoral votes, so Mr Webster is delusional that his diligent pursuit of preventing voter fraud by minorities and college students will elect a Republican President.
Fact#2. Most state universities are doing every thing they can to increase enrollment, especially by bringing in qualified out-of state students. he wants maine to tell these students that you need to make plans to be in your home state on the 1st Tuesday of Nov. every 4 year to make your vote count. Good Luck with that. Of course what 18-22 year old would want to spend Sept-march in Maine anyway.

    1. But the GOP told us that Rmoney would win the electoral vote in the 2nd District – and that Raye would beat Michaud.

      So why did they lose?

It must have been voter fraud!!!!!!

      Delusional fools.

      Yessah

  16. The minorities are smart enough to know Republicans will like them now just to get their votes. The minorities will see right through that.

  17. Yeah, shame on the GOP, how dare they speak their minds, what do they think this is, a free country or something? They better watch out, the federal administrators are watching. Bad Webster, bad, bad, bad.

    1. Charlie Webster, the private citizen, is free to say whatever he wants. As a member of the GOP, I wish he would stop talking as the chair of our Party.

  18. The “heart” of the Republican Party is a heart of DARKNESS that WILL NOT CHANGE so they can forget about their future. Already they are doubling down not only with radical racist rhetoric once again about non existent voter fraud, but also with these pathetic secession petitions, and the radical attacks their congressional members are making against Obama, and with the MittTwit chomping on stinking sour grapes saying he lost because “Obama gave people gifts,” and on and on. The HEART of the Republicans is one of ethnocentrism, racism, and delusional FEAR. The more moderate GOP of Ike and Chase Smith is very very very DEAD. You now have an ultra radical, ultra WHITE, ultra SCARED, TEAPUBLICAN Party that is awash in FAKE NEWS and the RushLimpmindHateFilledTalkRadioShow. The TeaPublicans HATE that a black Democrat is in the White House. They HATE that they are becoming the racial MINORITY. They HATE the very notion of being an INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY of Americans. They HATE that they think they are losing their racial and socioeconomic status and power. And so they are doing all they can to suppress voters, to suppress workers, to suppress all manner of rights, and on and on. And it is BACKFIRING BIGTIME. The TeaPublican HEART OF DARKNESS will NOT CHANGE anytime soon. Indeed, they are doubling down, and FURTHER alienating themselves from reality and today’s America, And tokenism won’t do it. They need to seriously MODERATE in their HEART, in their WORLDVIEW, and that is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. The TeaPublicans are what they are, and the HEART doesn’t change easily. The TeaPublicans just suffered a CRUSHING DEFEAT in Maine and America. It was not done TO them. They did it to THEMSELVES. It was a political SUICIDE that is going to continue unless they truly see the light and decide to truly and sincerely allow some light into their angry and delusional and radical HEARTS. I am not holding my breath.

  19. “failing to recognize their needs could mean a slow decline for the Republican Party.”

Couldn’t agree more but most of us are looking for a…… well you know a…… fast decline in the Reprehensible Party. I guess we just have to let them talk some more is all. LOL!

  20. To survive, the GOP needs to rid itself of such people. Webster should be expelled from the Republican Party.

  21. Whereas New Hampshire had a voter ID law in place this year. Thanks to a Tea Party Republican supermajority in the state legislature, which passed it over Governor Lynch’s veto.
Result — a total Democratic sweep. We now have a woman Democrat for governor, an all-female Congressional delegation (3 Dems to 1 Repub), a large Democratic majority in the state House of Representatives, and the Repubs held onto their Senate majority by a single seat (no more veto-proof majority).
Perhaps the lesson here is that you cannot spend months and months spitting on large groups of Americans, and then expect them to vote for you.
And no amount of rinky-dink voter suppression trickery will save you.
Time for the GOP to step out of the Limbaugh/Fox News shouty bubble and rejoin the real world.

    1. Great Post. You hit the nail on the head with the phrase “Large group of Americans”. Hopefully Webster and his ilk will someday realize that they are not the only Americans.

  22. I think Charlie Webster and the GOP clearly recognize the needs of a diverse electorate. And along with Charlie Summers they tried to use voter suppression tactics to make sure that only the needs of the rich and powerful get represented.

Repugnant racist. That is Charlie Webster. In some respects we should be thankful that his mouth gets out in front of his brain, which surely understood that his true feelings about blacks voting were not something to be shared publicly.

  23. At what point do we stop accepting these “apologies”? These are high ranking individuals in the party and they keep saying things they supposedly don’t mean?

    1. He doubled down and did not apologize during several interviews after his original racist insult.
      .
Then, after two days or so of very negative news coverage, he finally issued a non-apologizing “apology”.

      .
Someone sat him down and ordered him to retract. Webster does not have the intelligence or common sense to do it on his own.

  24. Minority NEEDS? All Americans need the same thing the freedoms in our founding documents and to have the government out of our lives.
What this story SHOULD be titled is the people that want the government to take what some EARN and give it to those who do not.

Lazy has no color or race. Want it EARN it but leave mine alone.

  25. So you do not believe there is voter fraud. Not surprising. Charlie may have gone the wrong direction but to say it doens’t happen in foolish.

  26. This is the same guy that shut down the voting in the primary due to “snow” that never materialized. – snow in Maine? He cheated the Ron Paul voters and stripped them of their rightful Maine delegation. We did not forget you Charlie. You are a disgrace in more ways then one.

  27. Do we really need two parties pandering to the minority voter? The Dems seem to have the concept of empty promises of free giveaways down pretty good, Do we really need a second party buying votes with giveaways?

  28. I wonder, if in 30 years when Caucasians become the minority, if we will get as much deference from their government as they get from ours.
It’s a rhetorical question. I know the answer.

    1. Gee, it must be hard to be an old white man. As if, for so many decades and centuries, they did not dominate and have so many advantages in so many ways. Time for a change!

  29. Has anyone done the research on all of the voting precints, primarily in the ”swing states” where obama got 100%, 99%, & 98 % of the votes. Joe Stalin use to get numbers like that. Ray Charles R.I.P. could see that doesn’t add up.

      1. One county on ohio eienstein

In this first set of Cuyahoga County precincts, Mitt Romney received exactly zero votes in each instance…

These numbers look even more bizarre when you start comparing them with the overall results from the rest of Cuyahoga County that you can find right here.

The results from most of the precincts look very much like what you would expect from a competitive national election.

But there are more than 100 precincts where the results look incredibly suspicious. Here are some more precincts where Barack Obama won more than 99% of the vote…

        1. Provide the source for these “stats” or they mean nothing. Let’s see if you provide the direct source or link.

          1. You’ve got zilch. From some right wing site I’m sure. Just like the polls from your side that lost. They had that all wrong too.
You cannot even spell “Pollyanna” right.
Take your numbers to someone who will not think you are delusional.

          2. honestly you’re so much about the facts, read up on Gallup and polling in general, Gallup ain’t all they used to be. There is only one person who generally has it correct and that’s Nate Silver. Don’t believe me look it up somewhere else other than FIX Noise.

          3. Whatever, and how’d that all work out? Would love to say and discuss meaningless trivia, but the PATS are on ..soon Bu by

        2. It’s a shame he got as many as he did, all this proves is Romney was snookered by the Conservative Entertainment Complex, they pumped out phony metrics and those who chose to listen to their fabrications and hype paid the price for believing. Read-em and weep.

          1. You assuming that everyone of these precincts cheated is all the proof anyone needs to know who has been lobotomized, the writing is on the WALL! LOL

          2. Save it for your fellow second graders…..had ONE precint in the county reported a 99% Romney victory you’d be doubling down on your methedone

          3. Ah the agony of defeat. The poor misguided wing nuts can neither lose with dignity nor except it, but then we already knew that.

          4. As your name is applicable to you…..picking up the latest Cosmo magazine to see what’s the best lipstick to put on a pig.

          5. Nope, never read that magazine, and that is not what my username says. I will leave the stupid sick comments of Palin to you as they seem to go hand in hand.

          6. It was unbelievable. Have you seen how so many Republican leaders are now distancing themselves from Mitt? You should have heard Gingrich this morning. Mitt can ride his garage elevators though.

          7. Agreed, even more unbelievable is this simpleton posting how badly Romney did and not believing it, After making all those derogatory comments about the 47% and the auto industry and all Romney said that was factually untrue wing-nuts still expected a win, Who’ed a thunk?

    1. You think the guy that wanted the auto industry to go bankrupt in the land of auto parts manufacturing would be wildly popular?

      1. SwampDonkie. GM is history. They hid all the numbers before the election. They are bleeding more red ink then they were before. The American people will not stand for another bailout of GM.. Time for them to be broken apart and sold off.. The union pension funds have distroyed the company.. They haven’t paid back one red cent yet. They borrowed money from a diffrent government agency to pay back the original note to the government, just to have a talking point.. Do your home work.

  30. I am no lover of Democrats these days, but in a state that badly needs government audits on all levels, and a focus on jobs that fits the character of the state; that the Republicans and Charlie Webster, when they had the majority, chose to focus on crap like voter fraud and giving the finger to Affordable Healthcare proves that they are grossly out of touch. Apologies don’t mean a thing, learning from your mistakes does.

  31. There no sense shaming those who have no shame, instead of shaming I’m counting the days till the 2014 mid-terms – 716 I’m thinking ..Dems need to stay focused because there’s more hell yet to pay and the only thing that matters is getting those hellions out of office, both here and afar.

    1. Less then 6 months, the US dollars will be worth Zero around the world..No country in their right mind would by us bonds.. don’t worry about the 716 days. the world economy won”t last that long.. See you in the Bread lines.. The Obama plan isn’t to save America, it is to bankrupt it.. Do your home work.
