BANGOR, Maine — Police found a deceased man in a van parked outside St. Joseph Hospital early Sunday morning.

Police were dispatched to the hospital parking lot at 1:10 a.m. Sunday after a security guard checking on an idling van saw an unconscious male in the back of the vehicle.

Rescue crews broke out a window to get inside the van, but found the occupant had died.

Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday morning that the man’s identity is being withheld while the department’s Criminal Investigations Division and the state medical examiner’s office investigate.

“Some drug-related paraphernalia was found in the van and detectives are investigating to determine whether or not drugs played a role in the death,” Edwards said.

    1. A man has passed away. There are a million possibilities to explain his death that only the medical examiner will be able to figure out. Having drug paraphernalia does not necessarily mean much because rolling papers are considered drug paraphenalia.

  1. Probably froze to death sleeping in his van. Since the adjacent HOTEL ( with doors that don’t fit the door frames and pop open each time the elevator arrives on the floor. Which turns the tv off at midnight. Which has beds that are leftovers from the Pediatric Dept. ) only takes credit cards. Yes, no cash, no checks, just plastic.

    1. When I stayed at this hotel, as it was the least expensive that my wife and I could find for our anniversary, we had no troubles. Actually a very enjoyable experience. Sorry you had a bad experience.

    2. ROFL all that effort into a post that flames the wrong hospital. Good work.

Kind of have trouble believing you stayed there since you don’t even know which hospital its attached to, but okay.

  2. He probably went to EMMC a couple of days ago and got tired of waiting so went to St. Joes. At EMMC it’s called a waiting and waiting and waiting room.

    1. It’s a trauma center. It’s the only one up this way. If people are waiting, waiting, waiting, then chances are many of them belong in a walk-in care, or they should have seen their doctor before it got so bad that it is intolerable. No pcp? PCCH has at least 2 walk-in cares that I know of.

Emergency rooms (much like their name implies) are for exactly that – emergencies.

      1. If EMMC would hire enough staff, there wouldn’t be so long a wait, wait, wait. But it’s all about money. Eastern Maine Wealth Care

        1. spot on!!! I can clearly understand why people go to the emergency room, because half the time, when your trying to make a Dr. Appt. the Pre registration Staff, does NOT answer the phone!, but instead tell you to leave a fone # and they will call you back… HINT people can”t wait for that call, they need to go to WORK !!! and cell fones are not allowed, at many work places!!!!

          1. Thanks for your post; however some folks might feel, they will NOT be turned away at the ED, for lack of insurance!!! So it would be helpful, if you POST…. the clinics will accept folks without insurance at this Walk In Care facility @ either hospital!!!! People are in the dark when it comes to knowing their choices!!! without Insurance!!!!

          2. emergency rooms can’t turn people away for a lack of insurance. it’s against the law. It’s called EMTALA, look it up. If you’re at the emergency room and you are able to wait for an hour or two, then it’s not an emergency.

          3. Exactly!! Go to Walk In Care and leave the ED for the REAL emergencies. It will make life easier for everyone involved, including the patient! Take your runny nose and sneezes and coughs where they belong and that is NOT in a waiting room at the Emergency Department!

          4. can”t you read??? you LOOK up to my comment above yours, self explanatory Your were too quick to jump on me!!

          5. Okay, okay, I’ll POST: No need to yell my friend. :)

Take a gander at how much they spend for charity care: http://www.emmc.org/SearchResults.aspx?searchtext=charity%20care

Bear in mind that in order to help the most desperate people, there has to be a cutoff somewhere, so not everyone will qualify. As much as I dislike hearing the old cliche’ “There is no “free” lunch,” there really is no free lunch.

ER’s are mandated by EMTALA laws (which were put in place mainly because larger innercity hospitals were dumping their indigent patients on smaller hospitals, and those hospitals were going broke and closing).

There is no reason for people to be “in the dark” now in this age of google. All it takes is a minute or two. If most people can find some foolish video on youtube to post to their facebook, then chances are they can look up something like this. Even if they have no internet access, they can certainly ask someone at walk in care or the ED. I’m sure they’d be more than happy to help.

      2. EMMC is the sending point for all of the rural hospitals in Northern Maine, We do not have trauma centers up here. If you are at the emergancy room for a cold, or a sore throat you need to go to walk in care clinics or you will wait. The car accidents and heart attacks will be taken care of first, and depending on what’s going on in the whole state the wait at EMMC may be very long.
