AUGUSTA, Maine — Results from two legislative vote recounts Monday confirmed victories for Democrats in both tight House races.

The first recount confirmed that Democrat Brian Jones of Freedom defeated incumbent Republican Rep. Ryan Harmon of Palermo by 31 votes. Vote totals confirmed by the secretary of state’s office show Jones attracted 2,253 votes to 2,222 for Harmon, who is finishing his first term in the House.

The second recount confirmed that Rep. Alan Casavant, D-Biddeford, will keep his seat in the House chamber after winning re-election by 15 votes. Casavant prevailed over Republican challenger William Guay of Kennebunkport 2,574-2,559. Casavant, also the mayor of Biddeford, is finishing his third term in the House.

The secretary of state’s office has conducted nine recounts out of 14 requested by losing candidates in two state Senate races, 11 state House contests and one race for Piscataquis County commissioner. None of the recounts conducted so far has changed a race’s outcome.

Additional recounts are scheduled for Monday night, Tuesday and Monday, Nov. 26.
