BRUNSWICK, Maine — The School Department has recovered the $5,600 it believed was lost after a central New York-based vendor went out of business.
“They had never cashed the check, but then we put a stop payment on the check,” school board member Matt Corey said Tuesday. Corey said he received the information from Superintendent of Schools Paul Perzanoski, who was unavailable for comment Tuesday morning.
Perzanoski reported at the Nov. 14 school board meeting that Syracuse, N.Y.-based Central Xchange, which had been hired by the schools for the past four years to manage substitute teacher assignments, could not be reached after being paid $5,600 for the current school year.
Perzanoski said the company reportedly was having problems with its software, but stopped responding to his calls and emails in late September.
As it turned out, the business dissolved in January 2010, according to documents filed with the New York State Division of Corporations.
The company’s website is still online at www.centralxchange.com, but the phone number on the site reaches an Acton, Mass.-based car wash equipment company. The office manager of State Tower Associates of Syracuse, where the company’s address was listed, last week said the company moved out several years ago.
Corey said he didn’t know how to reconcile that the school department has done business with the company for the past two years.

Out of business 2 years where did the money go last year? Why would they hire them again?
Didn’t the school board check into the company before hand?
How much did it cost to recoup $5600.00? Don’t tell me nothing- 2 years of some ones time- X number of hours times $00.00 per hr=????. You won’t work for my company.
Out of business in 2010….where were they getting substitute teachers then?
