NAPLES, Maine – One person died and another was seriously injured late Friday after a car slammed into a tree on Harrison Road.

Police said the driver of the car was killed after losing control on a curve at about 11:05 p.m. and striking a tree at a high rate of speed. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, according to a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office press release.

The passenger, who police said was belted in, was partially ejected from the vehicle. Rescue crews used extrication equipment to free him, police said. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston by LifeFlight helicopter.

The passenger’s injuries were not expected to be life-threatening, according to the press release.

Neither victim was identified as police sought to notify next of kin.

The crash remained under investigation early Saturday by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Cumberland County Crash Reconstruction Team. Police said speed is considered a factor while alcohol is not.

  1. This is at least the 6th motor vehicle fatality in the state in the past couple days where speed, traveling too fast for weather conditions, and lack of seat belt use were contributing factors. Yesterday morning, while I was transporting a patient who was in a wreck caused by driving too fast for the black ice conditions, drivers were passing my ambulance as if it was clear road conditions. Drivers need to realize that getting to Black Friday shopping deals needs to be less important than having to have your family shop for a casket and funeral arrangements.

    1. I just don’t get it. Why don’t people wear seat belts? What is the “cost” that people are trying to avoid by not wearing a seat belt? Is it a statement of invincibility? Is it repressed suicidal tendencies? Is it just rebelliousness? I just don’t get it.

      1. Some don’t wear them BECAUSE they are mandated. It’s against human nature to be told what to do by the Government for what should be such a common sense thing to do. My condolences to the family and friends of the victims.

    1. true one thing about seat belts some people are kind of on the big size you know what i mean. sometimes the seat belt will not fit around. i know dont say it. those people should lose weight

  2. I will only leave this one message. The brother to the guy that got killed on I 95 this weekend ,truly believes his brother would not have died if he had not been wearing one. I do agree they do save lives. But I also know they kill some people also. The other person was ejected and lived.HMMMMMMMMMMMMM

    1. Play Russian Roulette with all the chambers loaded and you can get lucky with a misfire, which is what driving without a seat belt is analogous to. With less than 1/10th of 1% of car accidents involve the vehicle being immersed in the water or engulfed by fire, the odds certainly are not with you hoping to be one of those .009 % who survive because they were ejected.

    2. What happened to the 5 people who burned to death upside down as your example as to why not to wear a seat belt? Now you know the brother of the guy killed earlier. Wearing a seat belt is common sense. If you don;t wear one, you have no sense.
