WATERVILLE, Maine — An intoxicated woman who wasn’t too pleased that her friend was being placed under arrest for operating under the influence wound up going to jail herself, police said.
Abby Bickford, 26, of Fairfield is facing an OUI charge while Vanessa Hartin, 26, of Canaan was booked on a charge of obstructing government administration, Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said.
Bickford’s vehicle was pulled over around 1:40 a.m. Sunday on Silver Street, and Officer Brian Gardiner suspected Bickford was intoxicated, Rumsey said.
Field sobriety tests confirmed the officer’s hunch, according to Rumsey. When Bickford was placed under arrest, Hartin became agitated.
“Hartin jumped out of the car and tried to intercept Gardiner as he was walking [Bickford] back to his cruiser,” said Rumsey.
Officer Matthew Libby, who was backing up Gardiner at the scene, was able to keep Hartin from hindering Gardiner’s investigation, but she remained uncooperative and “continued to get into [Libby’s] face,” Rumsey said.
Libby eventually had enough and placed Hartin under arrest, Rumsey said. She was taken to Kennebec County Correctional Facility and was released on bail later Sunday.
Bickford was booked into the Waterville police station on the OUI charge and released on bail.
Their mothers must be so proud.
