ROCKLAND, Maine — The city’s ban on overnight parking in public parking lots and along public streets begins Saturday.
The ban starts Dec. 1 and ends April 1.
The ban runs from 2 to 6 a.m. even when there is no snow falling. The ban is to allow streets and lots to be cleared.
Vehicles in violation will be ticketed. If the vehicle interferes with snow removal, it may be towed at the owner’s expense as well as ticketed.
This is a joke of a ban in Rockland. There is already an issue with parking in Rockland and now they put a ban in place, even with no snow issues. With the multiple means of notifications of a parking ban (TV, Villagesoup, BDN, Radio, etc…) there is plenty of time to put a ban in place if there is a snow storm. Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, Saco, Biddeford, Brewer are just some of the cities that do not do a winter long parking ban. Even small towns do not do winter long parking bans. I think it is time for Rockland to get with the times! The majority of the housing in Rockland is apartment living with limited parking spaces. There is NO public parking lots that have overnight parking in Rockland so what are these renters supposed to do with their vehicles if they do not have enough parking? I have a friend of mine that rents a 3 bedroom apartment for him, his wife, and his 2 kids. They have 4 cars (both kids are old enough to drive and worked and saved their money to buy cars) and have to park in the street for 2 of their cars. Again, this ban makes no sense other then as a means to potentially ticket and tow cars that are parked on the side of the street with no snow storm in sight!
