EDGECOMB, Maine — The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a self-inflicted gunshot wound that a preliminary investigation revealed was accidental.

On Wednesday at about 12:30 p.m., police responded to a report from a 70-year-old man on Moonlight Drive in Edgecomb who said he had shot himself in the neck. Sheriff’s department deputies responded, along with the Edgecomb Fire Department and Wiscasset Emergency Medical Services.

The man, who has not been identified by police, was taken to the Edgecomb Fire Department and flown from there by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. The man was suffering from a single gunshot wound that appeared to be non-life threatening, officials said.

The investigation into the shooting continued Thursday, and investigators hoped to interview the man later in the day, according to a news release.

  1. Why go to press without information? How did he shoot himself in the neck? Seems kinda hard to do. Just asking!
