PORTLAND, Maine — The city clerk’s office in Maine’s largest municipality will be open from 12:01 to 3:01 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, the first day same-sex couples can obtain marriage license under a law passed by voters Nov. 6.

A press release issued by the city late Thursday afternoon said the office would be open for “all business including issuing marriage licenses and performing wedding ceremonies.”

All members of the public in line by 3:01 a.m. will be provided service, the press release said.

Augusta, Brunswick, Gardiner and Hallowell have also announced that their municipal offices will be open Saturday morning, Dec. 29 to issue marriage licenses.

    1. I guess you missed this part of the story…”All members of the public in line by 3:01 a.m. will be provided service, the press release said.”

“All members” means straight AND gay.

      1. You really think they would of opened it up to the public if it were not for this change? I guess the wool is over someones eyes. Who is Portland trying to fool. lol

        1. I guess you also didn’t notice that straight couples can get married now. The were able to get married yesterday, last month, last year, tomorrow, next week, etc. You are just nitpicking now.

          1. You maid reference to “all members” I was pointing out, you really think this would be open Sat. if the referendum had not passed?

          2. Of course not, but again, all members can do it, so what’s your point?  That opening at 12:01 for all is a special right for the gays?

        2. I don’t wear wool…to itchy.

So Portland wants to be the first municipal to issue a same sex marriage license. Some one was going to be.

I would agree with your position if the licenses were being limited to same sex couples but they aren’t,

          1. and it would not be opened if the law had not changed. I wonder if the employees are doing this for free?

      2. You bring up a great point. It would be super if a straight couple got their license at that time as well. After all, there will be more than one engagement ring presented at Christmas.

    2. You sound like a very sad and bitter person. You shouldn’t worry about something good happening to other folks. Really…..
      Merry Christmas.

    3. You know Bruce if the Secretary of State had simply certified the results one day earlier as he could have but chose not to, this would not even be an issue. I suspect though that you would still find fault.

    4. I guess you missed the part where the article said “the office would be open for “all business including issuing marriage licenses and performing wedding ceremonies.”” It’s like Walmart opening early for Black Friday shopping. There are no special rights going on here…just trying to get through the rush….what ailes you????

    5. Like the ones religious folks have for choosing to follow a deity?

      Special “privs.” like that?

    6. Bruce, if you want to be married between 12 and 3 am on the 29th, go ahead. The rules do not say that you have to be gay. In fact, if you want, you can get up early to get your hunting license, or register your car on that day, as ALL offices are open.

    1. Yes. It’s unfortunate that everything that is so rosy and jake in this state, and that is everything, will end on 12/29/2012. All the drug abuse, murders, domestic violence, car accidents, rapes, etc., were all fine, but now, boy, this gay-marry starts and now the state is going to hell!

    2. No , actually, you have things mixed it up. It is actually something that is very good about Maine. The decency of Maine people to allow other Maine people (human beings) to certain rights and protections. Proud of Maine.

      1. Are Augusta, Brunswick, Gardiner and Hallowell also part of Mass? What about the rest of the state later that day. You sound bitter.

  1. So they’re saying that Augusta is no longer a municipality in the State of Maine? I read a couple days ago that they will be open on 12/29 to issue gay marriage licenses.

      1. Are liberals not Americans?  And aren’t they free to live wherever they want?  Maybe you should put up a Berlin Wall, but you’re in Florida.

          1. I forgot that the way you practice Christianity is the only way Christianity should be practiced.  Only those who think exactly as you do are real Christians.

          2. No, because I am not perfect. Though that is not what I asked. Apparently though that answers my question.

      2. Yeah MA is really terrible.Better schools, world class colleges, every citizen has health insurance-the list goes on.Try some red state dump like MS.At the bottom of the barrel and always will be.The fattest, poorest, dumbest state of them all and they’re worried about closing the one reproductive services clinic they have for poor women.SAD..

        1. OH that is right you accuse Romney of their health plan lol Yea, and the majority of abortions are of convenience.

          1. Apparently you’re such a big fan of your LOSER candidate you can’t spell his name right either.Keep showing off that conservative brain and denying facts while those of us smarter than you laugh hysterically.

          2. I do know where the edit button is lol, and who says I was a big fan? Unfortunately in the bigger picture we all lost. Liberals do tend to be hysterical though, you have that right.

      1. What terrible thing has happened with the legalization of gambling? I think it’s definitely a problem for some people, but on the whole it’s been a boon. Same sex marriage is even less controversial, or should be. There is no legal or ethical leg for those opposed to it, to stand on. Not that it matters now, anyway. Freedom won.

          1. If your church chooses to not perform a marriage ceremony for a gay or lesbian couple they are free to discriminate every day of the week and twice on Sunday if they so choose. The church cannot be sued as they are protected by the law that was just passed.

If you are referring to a business refusing to provide a product or service that they offer to the general public that was illegal prior to this vote. It was illegal before the vote, it was illegal on the day of the vote and it is still illegal today.

          2. That won’t change.Churches are closing their doors every day in the least religious state in the country. There is hope.

        1. Not my place to judge but this is still the United States, unless we have joined the Muslim Brotherhood. Not yet anyways

      1. Actually it was you side that had the major break down a few years ago. The crying and anger was quite disturbing. I know I’m on the right side

    1. Been together for decades, the novelty wore off long ago— replaced by sincere love, commitment, honesty and devotion.

    2. It’s unfortunate that you find that marriage is a novelty.  I guess that’s why some people are losing faith in marriage.

  2. Awesome news! Thanks to all who made this happen! As a straight man,I wish I could be there to share the joy.Much love and luck to all!
