OLD TOWN, Maine — An Orrington woman who told police she was pregnant was arrested earlier this month on a charge of operating under the influence after a Veazie police sergeant saw her driving erratically on Stillwater Avenue in Orono and followed her to Old Town.

After she allegedly performed poorly on field sobriety tests conducted by Veazie and Old Town police, Stephanie Dickey, 26, was taken to the Old Town Police Station for additional testing, Veazie police Chief Mark Leonard said Wednesday. Dickey, who was arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail, is out on bail.

Intoxilyzer test results indicated that Dickey’s blood-alcohol content at the time was 0.14, well above the legal limit of 0.08, Veazie police Chief Mark Leonard said Wednesday, citing a police report.

“She was eight months pregnant,” Leonard said Wednesday, citing the report.

Leonard said Thursday that Emery confirmed that Dickey told him she was pregnant at least twice before she was taken to jail — once shortly after she was pulled over and again after she was placed under arrest, at which time she specifically said she was eight months along.

Leonard said police were not able to confirm if she was, in fact, pregnant.

Penobscot County Sheriff Glenn Ross said Thursday that while Penobscot County Jail intake staff do ask female inmates if they are pregnant or have recently delivered a baby, inmates’ private medical and mental health information is not released to the media as a matter of policy.

The incidents that led to the arrest began in the early hours of Sunday, Dec. 2, according to Leonard, when Emery spotted the car Dickey was driving traveling erratically near the Mobil station on Stillwater Avenue in Orono and followed it as it turned onto Kelley Road and then onto the northbound lanes of Interstate 95

As he did so, he reportedly saw the vehicle driving at speeds that fluctuated between 55 mph and 61 mph on a stretch of highway with a posted speed limit of 65 mph, Leonard said, citing an arrest report submitted by Emery. The report also indicated that the car was weaving — crossing the centerline at least six times — and that the turn signal went on and off several times before the car left I-95 at the Stillwater exit in Old Town.

As it traveled up the ramp, the car was roughly three-quarters of the way over the fog line, Leonard said. Emery’s report said the car straddled traveling lanes after it turned onto Stillwater Avenue and headed toward downtown Old Town.

Emery then turned on the lights of his police cruiser and pulled the car over. Inside, he found Dickey behind the wheel, a man in the front passenger’s seat and a man and a woman in the back seat. He called for assistance from Old Town police. Officers Lee Miller and Wilfred King responded.

When he approached the car, Emery reportedly smelled an “extremely strong” odor of alcohol. Dickey, who reportedly said she was the designated driver, initially denied drinking but later said she had consumed two beers, Leonard said.

When asked about her less-than-stellar driving, Leonard said, Dickey said she had been distracted by the other people in her car and pointed out that she had a walking cast on her right foot, which was fractured.

Though the pregnant driver’s arrest on an OUI charge was not the first Leonard has seen in his career, it did have an unusual component to it.

“I don’t know that I’ve seen someone who was that far along,” Leonard said.

  1. Sad. Another Fetal Alcohol Syndrome kid that will go into State care. This problem is so widespread. People don’t seem to care about anything anymore.

    1. Besides the OUI, What other charges could they press on this woman? Assault? Child endangerment? Anything? Anyone?

    2. “Fetal Alcohol Syndrome,” another phrase that fell by the wayside — right along with dysfunctional, genetic predisposition and family of origin. Wish he picture was here for comparison… Lets see now, low IQ, close-set beady eyes, very limited attention span, tendency toward outbursts and violence… Kee-rist, better stop now, that’s about 20% of the people I know. LOL

Hmm, Driving through Old Town at 1AM, a cast on one foot with three with drunks in the car, designated driver and still over the limit — you might be an alcoholic.

      1. Some have average or above average IQs . but still have some social issues. Education dose not due a great job of addressing them.

      2. They will nab you in Old Town for going 2 mph over the Speed Limit at that hour. I know, I’ve been there before!

        1. I’m older now (late 40’s) but I knew better than to drive through Old Town and Orono at that time of night 30 years ago!

    3. This woman is my cousin. She is not pregnant. Not a week along, not five or eight months… she just isn’t pregnant.

  2. Yeah, and we wonder why some have the predisposition toward addictions. No doubt as well the father of the child is a loady themselves, if she even knows who the father of the child is, and then most likely lock up for violation of release.

Stay tune as another Maine saga unfolds..

  3. IDIOIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and im sure good ol DHHS will let her take the baby home from the hospital…The State of Maine Stinks!

  4. Despite what this article says, she is not pregnant. Yes, she was drinking and driving which is not a good thing, but she would never be pregnant and drink at the same time. She actually, is a very good person and this article should be taken down.

    1. A very good person who was driving DRUNK!!! Pregnant or not there is NO excuse for drinking and driving!!!

      1. No one made an excuse for her driving drunk. Someone explained that she was not pregnant and that there is a significant difference between driving drunk and driving drunk EIGHT MONTHS PREGNANT. The article is not factual and the errors should in fact be fixed, obviously.

        1. Ah no….operating under the influence is operating under the influence. She made a conscious choice to get behind the wheel (pregnant or not) and drive down the road after consuming enough intoxicating beverages to “blow” a 0.14 BAC.

          1. Allow me to reiterate my actual point as it was clearly misunderstood. She was driving drunk. An article stating that she was driving drunk is acceptable. She was not pregnant. An article stating that she was driving drunk while pregnant is not acceptable. I am not looking to pass judgement on anyone or make a statement on the act of drinking and driving, the level of incompetence at the BDN is astounding. The errors in the article should be fixed to mirror the events that actually happened that night, obviously.

          2. I respectfully disagree. Since when is it a newspaper’s duty to report everything they’ve been told? I would venture out on a limb far enough to say that it would be the newspaper’s duty as a “reputable” source of news to take the information they’ve been told about and verify its legitimacy before printing it or broadcasting it to the general public as fact. It would be a pretty simple error to rectify. “The police report stated the woman said she was eight months pregnant, this hasn’t been directly verified.” “The woman told the officer involved she was eight months pregnant, we are unable to reach her for comment at this time.” Yada, yada, yada…

          3. Who does the BDN verify it with? The suspect? Annominous posters to the BDN?

Ms. Dickey was stopped for suspicion of OUI, she failed her field sobriety test, she blew a .14 BAC. She is suspected of drunk driving and people are more concerned about a statement someone made about a pregnancy that may or may not be true then the fact that she put herself (the DD), her passengers, other drivers and the geneeral public at risk. She is lucky she didn’t cause an accident or kill someone.

That is what we should be discussion unless your concern is about the woman’s reputation which I think may have been more damaged by the OUI charge then a pregnancy.

          4. If the BDN chooses not to verify facts that is their decision, they just need to clarify to the public when what they are writing is not factual, but instead it is alleged. The woman’s reputation is neither here nor there, she got a DUI this is a fact and I agree with it because her breathalyzer registered in at 0.14 which qualifies her as legally drunk. This is a fact. I am not concerned with the woman’s reputation, but rather, something entirely different. I am concerned that a news source is printing a story that focuses on this purportedly pregnant woman when central argument should be grounded by facts about her DUI. The woman got a DUI because she blew a 0.14 BAC, yes let us all discuss this to our hearts’ content. It was dangerous and she endangered lives; please debate amongst yourselves. My issue is that the central focus of the article (given away by its title) is that the woman driving drunk was eight months pregnant and a correction to this article should have been released by now. My sole concern is the integrity of the BDN. I don’t want to have to second guess the validity of every article I read because they report assumptions as fact.

      2. You right thier is no excuse for driving drunk. Dose that make her not a good person? Lets see as many people are killed by unnecessary operations as drunk drivers. Doctor must be just plain evil. or texting while driving kills as many. But we would not call a person using thier cell phone while driving a bad person.

    2. Why would she tell the officers at the scene she was 8 months pregnant? Trying to convince the officer she wouldn’t drive drunk because she was?

    3. Very good people do not Drink & Drive…. Nor do they lie about being pregnant.. I am sorry but she is not a very good person

      1. Few people are “very good”. Let see 12,000 people a year are killed by operations that were not necessary. Odds of dying about 1 in 500 much more riskey than drunk driving. But yet we respect doctors . A mistake is a mistake. Maybe you do not drive drunk but most people could go along with things that are just plain wrong.

  5. The girl isn’t pregnant…I know her and she made a dumb move but she is NOT pregnant. Not sure how that got into the police report and story but its dead wrong.

    1. because she told the officers she was pregnant and was the D.D. She specifically said she was 8 months along.

  6. Every vulgar comment below regarding the “pregnant” drunk driver should be redirected to the “author” of this article. You have got to be kidding me, does any one check their sources and/or facts anymore? Is this a news source or a gossip rag? The vehicle’s driver was not at the time, nor is she now pregnant.

    1. She told the officer she was pregnant, and apparently looked like it. Hard to expect officers to take along ultrasounds on patrol :/

      1. “She told the officer she was pregnant.” There are some facts right there. “She was 8 months pregnant.” Not a remotely factual statement. This is not a reaction for or against the driver, this is simply a reader begging the BDN to properly vet information before reporting it to the general masses.

      2. Very true, maybe they can add an US machine to the defibs they already carry. Would help in cases like this.

    2. Emery confirmed that Dickey told him she was pregnant at least twice before she was taken to jail — once shortly after she was pulled over and again after she was placed under arrest, at which time she specifically said she was eight months along.

  7. I think ignorant people like you shouldn’t be able to post on here. You have no idea whether this article is true or not, I happen to know for a fact she wasn’t pregnant, the author of this should be ashamed of posting this..

  8. Kyle, why did she say she was then? To try to convince the police she was the DD? They have video now a days…

  9. An accusation of being ‘visibly pregnant’ (an observation not attributed to anyone) while actually not would make most 26 year olds run to Jenny Craig.

  10. It would be interesting to know whether the obstetrician delivering the child diagnoses fetal alcohol syndrome. It could be worse – the child could be born addicted to heroin or synthetic opiates. There’s too many born each year in Maine displaying withdrawl symptoms(eight hundred forty-some last year IIRC).

  11. Drinking booze while pregnant. Now the kid will likely have a birth defect and or learning disability or some other mental and or physical impairment….and the taxpayers will be stuck paying for that extra expense,Medicare, special ed programs, etc….on top of regular welfare.payments

    1. Haha, on top of the regular welfare payments….well done! Its so dysfunctional that we now even forget we are paying for this behavior!

      1. Mothers who have kids with mental and or physical birth defects or autism , dont want to blame it on themselves for boozing drugging or smoking while pregnant. They want to blame it on someone else or chemicals in plastic bottles, or some other scape goat excuse.

  12. Unbelievable!! Apparently this is not the first time she has pulled the
pregnant friend card. Not sure why I did this but if you scroll down to
Nov 1 on her facebook page she posted a status that says “I Just had to
play the ‘pregnant’ friend so we wouldn’t go to jail”. Sounds like a real winner…

    1. We ain’t buying it ! You people are trying to cover for the fact that the child never made it to term because of alcohol poisoning. For the love of who ever urge her to get sterilized.

      1. Don’t get me wrong I’m on your side. I think she is/was pregnant and is trying to use it as an excuse…twice in about a month… like I said. Sounds like a real winner

        1. If she had a miscarriage because of that im pretty sure you would be reading an article that said she did…. Do you really think that story would be hidden? You dont have to believe me because some of you are being too ignorant and not rationalizing here, Im her brother and was out that night with her and her friends, wasnt present at the time of her being pulled over as I had gone home early but there is no way in hell I would of let her drink if I thought she was pregnant…

          1. “Emery confirmed that Dickey told him she was pregnant at least twice before she was taken to jail — once shortly after she was pulled over and again after she was placed under arrest, at which time she specifically said she was eight months along.”

    2. You did it because like a lot of posters you are simply looking to gossip and bad mouth someone you don’t know.

        1. Hit the nail on the head right there. How anyone can defend her with a straight face is beyond me. Whether she was pregnant or not she was still driving drunk and still lied to a police officer…twice!!

      1. And there YOU go assuming something about somebody YOU don’t know. I can tell you for a fact that, unfortunate as it may be, I DO know this person, albeit, from back in school. Let’s just say I wasn’t surprised by the article and leave it at that!!

      1. BDN keeps deleting the links to her page so maybe this will be allowed. It is just a copy/past of her status from Nov. 1. Again, regardless of whether or not she is pregnant, she has obviously tried this brilliant move at least twice.

          1. No she deleted her fb because of people like you that have nothing better to do than discuss something that not only is false but weren’t there, you see people in the court section with OUI’s and DUI’s all the time, do you try to ruin their lives? I would advise you do you and not troll on here to make people believe something that is not.

    3. To dontyell (because it won’t let me reply directly to you)

It is amazing to me how the people who are defending this girl cannot
seem to see the bigger picture. The intent of my posting her past
facebook post was simply to show that she has used the “pregnant friend”
lie to law enforcement on at least TWO separate occasions. It does not
matter whether or not both times were for a DUI. That is not the point
      I was making.

Those of you defending her need to admit the
facts. SHE made an extremely stupid decision, SHE fed false information
to an officer and wonders why is shows up on the police report/media,
and SHE will have to live with the consequences. Just feel fortunate
that this is not a much more tragic article and “move on”…

  13. Just another infant that will be released from the hospital to a Foster family. So sad to think someone can be so abusive to such an innocent life!!

  14. Which is it, BDN?? Was she pregnant or not? Please read through these comments and let them know the truth. So many people who know this woman say she never was pregnant and she only said she was so she could get out of an OUI.

  15. does anyone notice how long the cop followed her before he pulled her over put a
lot of lives i danger why not pull her over before she kills someone just saying seam like he had her in the first place

    1. We can not randomly stop people with no reason Driving a few miles under the speed limit in a 65mph zone is not against they law .

  16. Another Mother of the Year candidate. Take the baby from her when it’s born and give to a family who cares.

  17. SO i’m just to understand that this woman wasn’t pregnant….but actually rotund enough to be mistaken as pregnant? Even with a news article written about her? This is comedy gold! Thanks Maine for never being dull.

  18. She is not pregnant. Way to print her name and make false accusations against her, maybe they should have given her a pregnancy test at the station and confirm the officers SUSPICIONS before dragging her name through dirt.

    1. What is with you people?? defending her and knocking the police, when they were just doing their job, the usual way, in giving the story( which she gave them) to the press. Print her name, like they do for anybody caught drinking and driving.
Do you live under a rock?
. The names of police officers ect. are given to the press, why do YOU think SHE is special, and her name should be withheld?… Do you know for certainty, the Police can administer such a test at the station?
Dragging her through dirt, you say! She could have ended up buried in 6 feet of dirt!! Thank God and get off here, defending a drunk driver!!!

    2. ” Emery confirmed that Dickey told him she was pregnant at least twice before she was taken to jail — once shortly after she was pulled over and again after she was placed under arrest, at which time she specifically said she was eight months along.”

  19. BDN, please remove the information about my cousin being pregnant. She is not pregnant at all. She should not have been driving, but providing false information like this is simply not OK.

    1. Your cousin is the one who has to contact the paper. Your cousin is the one who shouldn’t have lied to the officers. She also shouldn’t have been driving after drinking so much booze.

    2. WO ME it’s not fair…. tell you cousin next time, learn to tell the truth, and the information will be correct…The BDN only wrote what was in the police report, the very report SHE gave the Police, so get over it already, it’s simply NOT ok to tell lies…

  20. Instead of saying “a visibly pregnant woman.. maybe rephrase it to “a woman claiming to be 8 months pregnant”… I mean really?

… Me. Rev. Stat. Ann. tit. 17-A § 208-C provides that a person is guilty of elevated aggravated assault on a pregnant person if that person intentionally or knowingly causes serious bodily injury to a perosn they know or has reason to know is pregnant. “Serious bodily injury” is defined to include bodily injury that results in the termination of a pregnancy. These provisions do not apply to an abortion for which the pregnant woman has consented, or to any medical treatment of the pregnant woman or the fetus. (2005 Me. Laws, Chap. 408, LD 262)

  21. I am the father of Stephanie and I would like to say first and foremost that I do not condone anyone that steps into a car under the influence of any substance. I can further attest that my daughter is not pregnant and was not pregnant at the time of her arrest. I have been able to find out that the officer was led to believe that my daughter was pregnant and only reported what he believe was true. However, I feel that I must state that I find it disturbing that Bangor Daily News would print such an article based on a single persons testimony without vetting the story properly and finding corroborating witnesses to confirm the fact. I did discuss this with the Editor -In-Chief Mike Dowd and he told me that they printed the story based on the police report. How many other stories are printed based on single witness testimony? My family and I have spent the whole day in damage control based on a false and deliberately sensationalistic story. When I talked to Mike, he tried to defend it, and I replied that I was only trying to let him know that they got it wrong and I was only trying to see that they got it right… I hope they do, albeit, a little too late…

    1. DAD of the year, should have done damage control with your daughter before she learned to drink and drive….huh

    2. Your daughter caused the damage by lying to a Police Officer. The single person testimony came from your daughter. Your daughter is the one who told the officer she was pregnant, and you’re mad that the BDN published it? Blame your daughter, not the BDN.

    3. Bangor daily reports the news, they do not create it. The report read as follows: “Emery confirmed that Dickey told him she was pregnant at least twice before she was taken to jail — once shortly after she was pulled over and again after she was placed under arrest, at which time she specifically said she was eight months along.”

Based on your Daughters facebook page this is a common ploy on her part. Let me guess, she is on welfare? Food Stamps, Public assistance?Dad, instead of spending time defending your daughter why not give her a boot in the a** . At 26 years old don’t you think this behavior should stop? Partying, Drinking and driving and all on a week night when the rest of us are paying for these shenanigans.

  22. “An Orrington woman who told police she was pregnant ”

Some posters need to apologize to the BDN and the police.

    1. The BDN published the original story at 9:58 PM on Dec. 12 with the title of “Orrington woman, who was 8 months pregnant, arrested on OUI charge” and an introductory sentence of “An Orrington woman, who was 8 months pregnant…”. It was updated to reflect their presumptuous mistake today (Dec. 13th) at 6:01 PM. Why should some of the posters apologize? They (including myself) raised an extremely valid point that the original story, as it was run, presented certain (untrue) assumptions as fact. They realized their mistake and edited the story to reflect the truth and rectify THEIR mistake. I think “some posters” should be proud of themselves for holding the BDN to the high regard of truthfulness and factual reporting that every news outlet worldwide should be held to.

      1. Someone lied. Someone drove drunk and recklessly. Someone placed innocent people lives in danger.

Some posters need to apologize to the BDN for attempting to turn the someone into a victim.

      2. Did she or did she not tell the police she was pregnant? I am pretty sure that the police did not assume she was pregnant as they run into many obese people during their daily travels……my guess is that she told them that she was pregnant and this caused the police officer to put her statement in the report…thus the report. It was certainly not an assumption by the PD so stop complaining about the reporting and start considering who your friends are….

        1. I have a vast group of extremely wonderful friends, and this woman is not counted among them. Your assumption that she is, is wrong. I feel like your level of reading comprehension is on par with a third grader if that’s all you’ve gleaned from my post. Go ahead and accept everything you read in the BDN as fact, I for one, am glad that the article was updated to reflect the author’s mistake. It would seem to me that in changing the title and flow of the story, the BDN recognized that, as previously presented, it was wrong. Otherwise why would they have made the edits? I, personally, will never “stop complaining” (as you refer to it), and continue to hold my news sources accountable while expecting them to report facts as they come to light and keep the general pubic informed. You Sir or Madam, can do whatever you like because I, for one, full well understand that I have no control over your daily activities.

  23. So these folks started out at Mobile on Stillwater…..drove up Stillwater and connected to the Kelly rd…..and then proceeded to get on the interstate Northbound and took the Stillwater exit? Back where they started?

    1. Orrington woman who lied to be 8 months pregnant, arrested on OUI charge after placing many Maine people lives in danger

      How about that title?

  24. What a monster! .14 blood when pregnant! She should be thrown in jail immediately after this child is born!
