BANGOR, Maine — A woman described as a local transient was arrested last weekend after she allegedly shoplifted while at the Hannaford Supermarket at the Airport Mall on Union Street.

Josephine Coleman Sawyer, 26, is accused of stealing vodka and soda valued at $14.50, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Wednesday, citing an arrest report by Officer Joseph Ballargeon.

Ballargeon and other Bangor police officers were called to the supermarket Sunday afternoon after loss prevention personnel reported that a female shoplifter had fled the store, Edwards said.

Police officers found a woman matching the suspect’s description near the mall but she did not have the black backpack that witnesses said the suspect was carrying, so the officers let her go.

“She talked her way out of it,” Edwards said.

After the officers found the backpack in a nearby ditch — with the initial suspect’s photo ID inside that showed a different name than the one she gave police — they went looking for her again and found her on Indiana Avenue, he said.

Coleman was arrested on charges of theft and failure to give her correct name to police after a discussion with store employees and a review of surveillance footage from the supermarket reportedly confirmed she was the suspect. She then was taken to Penobscot County Jail.

      1. Good point , i overlooked that one.
Yes, health concerns are a priority when it comes to stealing alcohol.
Clear liquids are a good choice.

        1. Yup, but the clears are more apt to sting a sore lip.
When doing milk as a mixer, believe me, it is a fast actor to some of us, but maybe she already found that out? Maybe in that same ditch. (Can I say that under Guest’s new rules?) :)

  1. A seven paragraph article for shoplifting a bottle of booze. Maybe you guys at the BDN can get jobs working for the feds or the state, or the Eastern Maine Development Corp.

    1. It definitely could use some editing, but the ditched backpack, wrong name and two searches for her were included (or maybe they’re paid by the word?).

  2. Judging from the lip, she should have been stealing Carmex, or some other cold sore remedy…”Here’s a quarter go downtown and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face” – Uncle Buck

    1. 2.No vulgarity, racial slurs, name-calling or personal attacks.

Don’t insult one another or the subjects of BDN stories.

      1. People call me names and insult me all the time on this site.
Others rarely stick up for me.

        But , oh well , I;m a Redheaded Stepchild.
        I’m used to it.
So ….. bring it on !!

        1. So now you admit it!

Good for you and keep up the (sometimes) good work!
          Unattributed ‘rules’ don’t apply….

  3. Guidelines for posting
The primary rule here is pretty simple: Treat others with the same respect you’d want for yourself.
1.Keep it civil and stay on topic
2.No vulgarity, racial slurs, name-calling or personal attacks.
3.People who harass others or joke about tragedies will be blocked.

It should be noted this is not a comprehensive list.

Don’t insult one another or the subjects of BDN stories. You may be ticked off at what someone did or said, but you can explain that without resorting to name-calling or obscenity. Remember that young people are on this site too.

That nasty line that makes your buddies go “haw, haw”? You’re better than that.

Comments should be your own work, not copied and pasted from elsewhere, though brief quoted passages to make your point are fine. And please don’t use all capital letters. There’s no need to shout.

Stay focused on the issue in the article. Off-topic posts will be deleted.

Some ideas — the fate of the earth, abortion, gun control, the nature of God — aren’t going to be resolved in a reader forum, so no need to get frustrated if others don’t see your point of view. State your position once and leave it at that.
