BANGOR, Maine — The Bangor Daily News has hired Anthony Ronzio to be its director of news and new media.
Ronzio will take over the position formerly held by Todd Benoit, who recently was promoted to vice president and chief operating officer for the BDN.
Ronzio is currently new media director for Sun Media Group, owner of the Sun Journal in Lewiston. He will join the BDN in mid-January.
In his new position, Ronzio will oversee day-to-day newsroom operations and guide the long-term development of the BDN as it expands its ability to provide engaging coverage to readers across multiple formats, according to Benoit.
“Tony is an excellent journalist and a superb newsroom leader who knows Maine well,” Benoit said. “We’re especially excited about his work on digital products, and know he will be a major asset to the BDN.”
Ronzio’s journalism experience includes stints as chief executive of MaineToday Media’s two newspapers in central Maine, the Kennebec Journal in Augusta and the Morning Sentinel in Waterville; editorial page editor of the Sun Journal; and assistant editor of VillageSoup when the digital-first, community-news website began in Maine’s midcoast region. He also has been president and treasurer of the Maine Press Association.
“I’m excited to join the talented staff of the BDN and look forward to bringing our readers the best journalism in Maine, regardless of which platform they use to access it,” Ronzio said.

I hope he steps up and makes some much needed changes to the way they do their reporting. Sad part is since he is newly positioned, he may get fired for trying to do so. Im also curious how long this comment stays up
He’s smart, hard-working, puts readers first and is fair-minded. He learns quickly and can smell a good story. Congrats to the BDN for persuading him to leave Lewiston, where he was quite happy.
I agree 100 percent. I served on the Maine Press Association Board of Directors with him, and we also facilited a workshop for “boomer generation” citizen journalists a few months ago. I couldn’t ask for a nicer guy to work with.
Sussman Comes to Dinner…that oughta be helpful…..
Great move by the BDN, although it will prove a tough loss for the Sun Journal.
I hope he can persuade the Downeast “reporter” to get off his butt and
find some real stories.
Or at least take some usable photos when he stumbles across a story, by chance.
Cry some more.
I guess all we can do is wait and see……………………….
Hope he will institute some balance at this paper, notorious for its leftist tilt.
I hope he will bring the editing department back too, someone has to proofread a lot of these articles they post.
It would be nice to see some balance to the Bangor Daily Editorial.
Good Lawd, there is a long list of changes needed, that is for sure. Most of the reporter photos are I am not sure what, and what gives with Smiley report, let some other women have their families to write about, why one woman should have free space just to write about there own family I have never understood.
