SOMESVILLE – Mary Parker Smith, 83, peacefully Dec. 17, 2012, in her home, surrounded by family, friends and pets. Mary was born Aug. 4, 1929, on Mount Desert Island.
She was the wife of the late Ceylon Leslie Smith; and was predeceased by a brother, Robert H. Parker. She is survived by her brother, George S. Parker of Virginia; daughters, Linda S. Savage and husband, Rick M. Savage, Joanne C. Bradt and husband, Dirck Bradt, Ellen P. Smith and husband, Jay Liscomb, and Amy Gower and friend, Scott Baltz; and her son, David L. Smith and friend, Leigh Ann Kulla. She was known as “Mammy” by her surviving grandchildren, Edd Hamor and friend, Danette Connor, Joe and Beth Renault and Matt and Edi Hall. As well, she was fortunate to have several great-great-grandchildren, Will and Brady Renault and Evelyn and Daniel Howie.
Mary was born and raised on the family farm, known as Parker Farm, at one time a dairy bordering Somes Harbor. She was a devoted and loving stay-at-home mother, dedicated to raising her children and grandchildren in the same home, where she too was raised and lived until her final days. After her immediate family was grown she worked in Northeast Harbor for several years expanding her community relationships. Her home remained a respite throughout her life, as she relished in the opportunities to observe nature and the movements of the harbor outside her dining room doors. Geese feeding on the lawn, mariners mooring for the night in the harbor, or delighting in the ever changing skies and tides were a source of enthusiastic interest and conversation. Mary’s door knew no strangers; always open to help out those in search of a room or meal. This kindness was also extended to her four-legged friends, a source of entertainment and companionship. Mary too will be remembered for her witty self, able to provide humorous insight to most any conversation. In laughter her smiling eyes sparkled, her countenance lifted by a generous smile to reveal a face truly alive with the spirit of life.
At Mary’s request, funeral services will not be held. The family asks for donations in honor of her adopted dog, Oscar, to be made to Hancock County SPCA, 141 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, ME 04605.
