BANGOR, Maine — A Canadian woman was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court to two years and four months in prison for smuggling nearly 800 methamphetamine pills across the border.
Patricia Smith, 25, of Perth Andover, New Brunswick, was arrested Feb. 9 after the pills were found hidden in her car at the Bridgewater Port of Entry, located north of Houlton.
In addition to prison time, U.S. District Judge John Woodcock sentenced Smith to two years of supervised release after she completes her sentence. She is expected to be deported and barred from reentering the U.S.
Caleb Jewett, 21, of Mars Hill was arrested with Smith. Both were charged with importation of 50 grams of more of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine, and aiding and abetting the importation. Fifty grams equals 1.75 ounces of the drug.
Smith pleaded guilty in June. Jewett pleaded guilty to the charge in May.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 4.
Both were denied bail. The time they have held since their arrests will be applied toward their sentences.
The couple were referred for a secondary inspection about 8:30 p.m. Feb. 9 on a tip that they were involved in cross-border drug smuggling, according to court documents.
With the help of narcotics-detection canine Dorsta, 786 methamphetamine pills were found hidden in the rear doors on the passenger and driver’s side, according to the prosecution version of events to which the two pleaded guilty.
Jewett admitted that the pills were his, that he had paid $3 each for them and obtained them through Smith in Canada. He also said he hid them in the door panels, according to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court the day after their arrest.
In addition to prison time, Smith could be prohibited from reentering the U.S.

Is she expected to remain in Maine after the prison sentence in order to fulfill the two years of supervised release? If she is going to be deported after serving the sentence then why impose supervised release on an already over burdened probation system?

ok im confused its ok to get wasted and have your dog kill your baby but not ok to bring meth into the us? the drunk got a very short time and yet this woman gets more time? hmmm
You seem to have missed that they were in a Federal court…
2 years is all she gets for bringing drugs through an international border crossing. Hopefully now Fed. court will give her additional time. She was known for doing this for at least one year. She needs more time in a prison then ship her back to Canada and MAKE HER STAY THERE!
