AUSTIN, Texas — Former President George H.W. Bush, who led a coalition that ejected Iraqi forces from Kuwait in 1991, is in intensive care at a Houston hospital in “guarded condition,” family spokesman Jim McGrath said Wednesday.
The 88-year-old was admitted to hospital November 23 for bronchitis.
“The president is alert and conversing with medical staff, and is surrounded by family,” McGrath said in a statement.
“Following a series of setbacks including a persistent fever, President Bush was admitted to the intensive care unit at Methodist Hospital on Sunday where he remains in guarded condition,” McGrathsaid. “Doctors at Methodist continue to be cautiously optimistic about the current course of treatment.”
A hospital spokesman said in mid-December that the former president was expected to be home in time for Christmas, but that spokesman later said doctors felt he should build up his strength before returning home.
Bush has lower-body parkinsonism, which causes a loss of balance, and has used wheelchairs for more than a year, McGrath said in an email Wednesday.
Bush, the 41st U.S. president and a Republican, took office in 1989 and served one term in the White House.
The father of former President George W. Bush, he also served as a congressman, as ambassador to the United Nations, as envoy to China, as CIA director and as vice-president for two terms under Ronald Reagan.

Why repeat the same story from earlier today? Rest assured that the Bush family isn’t paying one cent for his medical care.
You should be ashamed. Get off the class-warfare horse and deal with reality. A lot of people–more than half of the nation–don’t pay a dime for their medical expenses. The American taxpayer pays for it. May I remind you that George H. W. Bush served his country honarably, from the time he volunteered at a very young age to serve in the Pacific War (and was shot down), through years as a politician, culminating in the Presidency. Regardless of your politics, he has more than earned the respect and care of the nation that he fought for and served loyally for so many years. You should be very, very ashamed for such careless and thoughtless remarks.
As I noted with the earlier story today, George H. W. Bush cheated on Barbara in two-long term relationships while she raised their family in Houston yet condemned others for violating Family Values. A total hypocrit who deserves no respect. More important, as I also noted–and was confirmed by Forbes, hardly a radical anti-Democratic publication–he cheated Mainers of hundreds of thousands of dollars in property taxes until after he left the White House by declaring Walker Point, till 1992 his only home, as merely a summer time property with vastly reduced property taxes than he really owed. But he’d be first in line to criticize a fast food worker for pocking spare changes if there were any tips. Read the controversy over the death of his crewmen when he was shot down but survived, where they did not. You know nothing about Bush, a less than honorable man and a lousy President.
In the dictionary, next to the word “scumbag” is your picture.
That man has more class, more dignity, more honor, and more service to his country in his little finger than you could ever hope to have. With any luck, your ticket to breathe will soon be revoked.
Phantom, please refer to bunyan1 as MISTER Scumbag in the future..as he knows his facts , and there is no dispute in what he wrote….and rinse the mud out of dem eyes….thanks…
That was funny!
As to the please request….not in a million years.
Your assertions above are nothing more than that, devoid of evidence. Georgie Boy WAS wise in not pursuing Saddam during the first Iraq War, but we all know that his son felt morally obliged to get ride of Saddam when he became President. Georgie Boy had no vision for a post-Cold War War in which the Soviet Union no longer existed. In some ways he indeed is an honorable man, but he has many blemishes and is no saint, contrary to your public relations image. Let him give to the state of Maine at least part of the property taxes he “stole” from us. Or is that too much to ask of your saintly hero?
If you’re going to make accusations of President Bush cheating on his wife, you had damn well be able to back it up with facts.
Kitty Kelley’s The Family is my source re Georgie Boy’s adultery. She was threatened with lawsuits if she published anything not true, but no lawsuit was filed once the book appeared several years ago. Forbes or Fortune was the source for the revelation about Georgie not paying his fair share of Maine property taxes for decades. You can google that story. Neither publication is exactly a hotbed of anti-capitalist/anti-GOP stories.
Story in today’s Daily Beast characterizes Georgie Boy’s treatment as “unequaled anywhere” (else). Speaks for itself about the kind of life he has led in terms of privilege.
He’s a goner.
It was great men and women who served their country that give us the freedom that we have today! Thank You Mr, Bush and each and every Veteran that has served our country!
