ARUNDEL, Maine — Police in York County are searching for a suspect, or suspects, responsible for stealing six tailgates from pickup trucks at a local dealership.

Employees at Arundel Ford on Portland Road reported Wednesday that the tailgates had been stolen from trucks ranging from 2007 to 2013 models, according to York County Maj. William King.

King said the value of the tailgates is estimated to be between $10,000 and $12,000. Police believe the theft occurred either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

Police have no suspects in the case, according to King, but anybody with information on this incident should call the York County Sheriff’s Office at 324-1113.

    1. It’s not about scrap, tailgates don’t weigh much. It’s about reselling them to those who don’t have several grand for a new one.

      1. This. Its the same reason people will break into a car and ignore the stereo…preferring to grab the steering wheel (and undeployed airbag) instead.

I’d bet money the thief is trying to sell them to repair places. They buy the tailgate for $100, charge the insurance company $2000.

    1. Unlike fenders, headlight assemblies and other body shop items, tailgates require no wrenches (if that’s where they’re headed).

  1. Well now, I have heard of tailgating, but this is a new version, what in hell will they think of next, I guess it may be easier than the muffler catalyst.

  2. That’s pretty funny. At $2,000 per tailgate it is no wonder they are a target.

Oh, BTW is that why all these old white pick-ups have different color tailgates?

  3. I thought I needed a new tailgate for my Ford since they are now made of tin foil, but I’m not paying $2000 for one. I’ll just keep my dented one.

  4. Maybe the local (neighborhood) scrapper thief was down that way … he has a different tailgate this week on his truck.

  5. Oh, look what the BDN done done now — quick, get a padlock on that tailgate or it won’t be there come morning. Every skeezer and weasel in downtown Bangor running around with a tailgate on his shoulder… “But I found it in the bushes, honest!” AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

    1. You don’t need a padlock on later model trucks.
This type of theft has been going on for years. That is why tailgates have locks now. Did you think it was to prevent someone from stealing the contents of an open truck bed?
“Oh, look! That tailgate is locked. Darn! We can’t reach over the side now>”
And it’s not just the BDN. Other papers have run this story. Also, would you rather be uninformed, so when YOUR tailgate is stole, you can blame the media for not alerting you to this type of theft so you can take steps to prevent it?
      Don’t hang the messenger.

    1. It’s more like $500. You can get them through a dealer for around $400, but then you have to pay to have it painted.
