HARRISONBURG, Va. — The University of Maine committed a season-high 29 turnovers and allowed James Madison to shoot 49 percent from the floor Friday night as the Dukes breezed to an 88-34 women’s basketball victory at the Convocation Center.

James Madison (5-6) used a 12-0 run in the first half to build a lead that reached 16 points by halftime, then the Dukes manufactured two 16-0 scoring surges in the second half to put the game out of reach.

The taller hosts also dominated the rebounding, grabbing a 43-26 advantage on the boards that included 17 offensive rebounds. James Madison also outscored UMaine 18-4 from the foul line.

“This is a terrific program. Give them a lot of credit,” coach Richard Barron told the Black Bear Sports Network. “They’re talented, they’re good.”

The Black Bears (1-10) suffered their seventh consecutive loss. UMaine’s extensive turnovers helped paved the way for the Dukes to attempt 21 more field goals in the contest.

The Bears’ 34 points were their lowest output of the season, while the 88 points by James Madison were the most UMaine has allowed this season.

“We picked up a lot of fouls and of course every time we fouled, that would set up the press,” Barron told the Black Bear Sports Network.

Sophomore forward Danielle Walczak led UMaine with nine points and five rebounds, all of which came in the first half. Freshman Liz Wood provided seven points and five rebounds, but committed eight turnovers.

Junior Ashleigh Roberts added seven points and freshman Chantel Charles netted five for the Bears, who shot 31 percent (14-for-45) from the floor.

Tarik Hislop paced a balanced scoring effort for the Dukes with 14 points and also posted four assists. Kirby Burkholder (6 rebounds) scored 13 points and Destiny Jones netted 12 points, while Jasmine Gill (8 rebounds), Toia Giggetts and Precious Hall connected for 10 points apiece.

James Madison shot 32-for-66 from the field.

“I still felt like we gave a decent physical effort throughout the game, but the competitiveness, the mental toughess that we need, we just don’t have right now to weather those kind of defensive storms,” Barron said.

UMaine returns to action Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against Towson University of Baltimore, which is also a member of the Colonial Athletic Association.

      1. With all due respect, Cindy, I believe, didn’t recruit from Europe, for whatever reasons, where her successor has. So ironic that the rest of the UME undergraduate body is seeking international students, in part because they’d pay outside tuition and, more important, help diversify the heavily homogenous student body, while the women’s and men’s basketball coaches get to recruit internationally. Cindy must be enjoying her successor’s big successes. Yes, she wasn’t a great coach, but her legacy to UMaine surely dwarfs his. She’s surely a class act who deserves future coaching success.

        1. 9 freshman what do you expect, seriously? these players have alot of upside, they have more talent then most cindy players she ever recruited, they will get better. Also this schedule has been brutal, i don’t think a umaine program has ever had a tougher schedule then this woman’s team. This team will be good next season or season after. but cindy’s team were not good and they were not going anywhere. This guy had to recruit a whole new team, man some people.

    1. dude this program has been rebuilt from scratch. There are 9 freshman on this team, get a grip. Cindy had the program going nowhere but downhill. This team will be good eventually, just not this year.

      1. yea will you say that next year when they are winning? so many cindy lovers on here who were happy finishing last in the conference. This team will struggle with 9 freshman who are used to international style of play, they will win and be better, patience. if you thought this team would be good this year then you all were in for a rude awakening. They havent even started league play yet.

        1. mm the best player he has was recurited by blodgett,i really dont care how much they win or lose,i will never travel to watch them ever again men or women, they will never have a big fan base again either, blodgett is so much better of where she is or if its somewhere else..dont care to watch all international players men or women thats what its all made up of…..win or lose dont care

  1. 54 point loss. This is what we have to show for UMAINE sports…This as well as the Men’s basketball, the Hockey team and every other big name sport at the University is embarassing. I imagine what other schools must thing when they see Maine on their schedules….We gotta travel all the way up there for them?? Really?? They University should fire Abbot now, and any coach that does not prove thier recruiting will make the teams more competitive…The fact that many of these so called athletes are from OUT of state and getting FULL boat Scholarships is truly disgusting when there are so many kids in state that cannot afford to go to college.

    1. how is it truly disgusting? The players that were good enough to play d1 ball in maine all left to go out of state before he had a chance to get any of them, and there werent many. I don’t think you realize the lack of athletic talent in maine? So what we should do is give d1 scholarships to d3 caliber players like cindy did?

      1. Normally if a product is bad, it will go OUT of business, but that is not the case with Maine Athletics, we just keep throwing money at them while this is the outcome of what they give us…that is what is truly disgusting!!!

      1. I used to be a HUGE fan when Cindy played and when Palombo McCallie coached and they actually recruited decent talent…what they put on the floor now is an embarassment..I would love to see some of the top HIGH SCHool teams take them on to show you how truly dreadful these teams are.

  2. “This is a terrific program. Give them a lot of credit,” coach Richard Barron told the Black Bear Sports Network. “They’re talented, they’re good.”

Coach…JM was 4-6 before this game. If THAT is what you feel is “terrific”, Maine’s program is in REAL trouble!
