AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage has ordered that flags statewide be flown at half-staff from Friday through Sunday at all National Guard facilities in honor of Lt. Col. Michael Backus.

Backus, 44, a Maine Army National Guard Active Guard and Reserve Officer, died unexpectedly on Monday at Camp Keyes in Augusta.

Backus graduated from Mt. Blue High School in 1986, and earned his degree from the U.S. Military Academy in 1990. He served the country in a number of capacities during his 22-year career.

Visitation hours are scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Wiles Funeral Home in Wilton, with funeral services set for 1 p.m. Sunday at the South Dining Hall at the University of Maine-Farmington.
