AUBURN – Janet S. Berta, 81, passed away peacefully Jan. 21, 2013, surrounded by her loving family at the Hospice House, Auburn. Janet was born Aug. 5, 1931, in New York City, the daughter of the late Otto E. and Matilda (Christman) Stamm.
She married her husband of 58 years, August Berta, Nov. 20, 1954. She kept the “home fires burning” as they worked and raised a family of four on Long Island and in Westchester, N.Y., before moving to Maine in 1981. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She shared her wisdom and talents with her family. Janet truly enjoyed her entire life: her childhood in New York, raising her family, 45 consecutive summers at Bog Lake in Northfield, and her 58-year marriage. Janet enjoyed a long career as a well-known, liked and respected realtor. She had a passion for turning her houses into “homes” and helping others find their “homes.” In recent years she most enjoyed gardening and spending time with her husband and family.
She is survived by husband of 58 years, August Berta; her sister, Joan Armitage of Toronto; and her four children, Robert Berta of Machias, Joan Casey and husband, Larry, of Pittsfield, Victoria Ballou and husband, Edward, of Auburn and William Berta and wife, Daphne, of Auburn. Grandchildren are Erin Casey-Williams and husband, Jonas, Ryan Casey, Michael Casey, Alison Berta and Corinne Berta. She will be deeply missed by all. She was predeceased by her parents; and brother-in-law, Hugh Armitage Sr.
Family and friends are invited to visit 6-8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at Pinette & Lynch Funeral Home, 305 Alfred A. Plourde Parkway, Lewiston. A memorial service honoring Janet will be celebrated noon Saturday, Jan. 26, at the funeral home with Father Raymond Picard presiding.
