PORTLAND, Maine — A traffic stop Friday led Portland police and drug agents to a significant crack bust and landed a man behind bars, police said.
Nega Negash, 39, was pulled over by Portland police on Congress Street on Friday after failing to stop at a stop sign, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said on Monday.
Authorities suspected Negash had drugs in the vehicle so Portland police brought in a drug-sniffing dog, which indicated the suspect indeed had contraband in the car, according to McCausland.
A bag found by MDEA agents turned up 6 ounces of crack cocaine, along with $1,954 in cash, McCausland said. The crack’s street value is about $16,000.
Negash was brought to Cumberland County Jail and charged with aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs. He is being held on $20,000 bail and was expected to be arraigned later Monday.
