ALFRED, Maine — A small fire was reported early Wednesday at the Southern Maine Re-entry Center, a Department of Corrections facility, and has been extinguished.
Scott Fish, director of special projects for the Maine Department of Corrections, said nobody at the center was injured.
The fire started in the laundry room of the facility, Fish said. The laundry room has fire damage, he said.
The corrections department is waiting for a report from the fire marshal’s office to determine when the facility can be safely reoccupied, Fish said.
The facility is designed to give women skills and experience needed to live as positive members of society after transitioning from state correctional facilities to their hometowns. The center houses up to 64 women, according to its website.
