DENNYSVILLE – Alton Hugh Ward, 83, passed away after a brief illness March 28, 2013. He was born Aug. 5, 1929, in Dennysville to George Sr. and M. Louise (Murphy) Ward.
Alton enjoyed hunting, fishing and cutting wood. He was an avid Red Sox fan and spent many years playing for Dennysville, Cutler and Eastport. Alton was a licensed customs broker for more than 30 years and held several elected offices in Dennysville over the years; town clerk, selectman and treasurer. Alton was a member and past master of Crescent Lodge No. 78 AF and AM, Pembroke, for more than 50 years. He was also a member of Anah Temple Shrine, Bangor, and a member of Scottish Rite.
Alton is survived by his loving wife of more than 62 years, Joyce Ward; daughters, Brenda Harmon and husband, Elmer, of Dennysville and Valerie Lingley and husband, Dwight, of Dennysville; sons, Randy Ward and fiancée, Tammy, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Michael Ward and wife, Susan, of Dennysville; brothers, George Ward Jr. and wife, Gloria and Clifford Ward and wife, Adeline; sister, Shirley Wilder Godet; grandchildren, Travis Harmon, Jaime Harmon, Bobbie Jo Brown, Brandi Lingley, Joshua Ward, Kimberly Ward, Nicholas Ward, T.J. Goodrow, Amanda Ward and Bradley Ward; great-grandchildren, Cody Brown and fiancée, Torie Metcalf, Kaylee Brown, Dante Lingley and Bella Collins. Alton is also survived by his beloved dog, Festus.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 220 Court St., Machias.
