In the top half, Castleton had a runner on third with one out, while Caylee Fleur looked to easily drive in the run, it was later deemed that Stephanie Sylvester left early from third for the final out. GORHAM, Maine – Senior Jessica Hayden (Madison, Maine) crushed a bases clearing double in the bottom of the fifth inning to bolster a strong pitching performance from senior Jesse Hutchins (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) as the University of Southern Maine Huskies salvaged a split against the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in a Little East Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine. Western Connecticut rallied for a nine-inning 8-7 win in the opener, while the Huskies picked up the 3-0 shutout victory in the second game.

With the split, Southern Maine picked up its first Little East Conference victory of the season to improve to 1-3 and 3-21 overall. Western Connecticut is now 9-15 overall and 3-1 in the Little East Conference. With the score knotted up at 0-0 in the midst of a pitcher’s duel, Hayden cranked out her second double of the game with the bases loaded to put the Huskies’ ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Hayden’s double was just inches short of being a grand slam as it hit off of the top of the fence and bounced back into Towers Field.

Needing just six out to secure its first victory in four games, Hutchins retired the Colonials in order in the top of the sixth. The Colonials threatened to rally for the second straight game in the top of the seventh. Hutchins put the first two Colonial batters on base with a hit-by-pitch and a walk, before getting her first out of the inning striking out freshman pinch hitter Alexandra Sabith (Meriden, Conn./Maloney). A single from senior Ashlie Morris (Wolcott, Conn.) loaded the bases for the Colonials, before Hutchins got sophomore Nina Wojkiewicz (Griswold, Conn.) to line out to the shortstop. Hutchins recorded the final out with her eighth strikeout of the game to earn the win.

Hutchins picked up her first win of the season scattering four hits and three walks over seven innings. Freshman Emily Cintorino (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) pitched well in the loss. Cintorino allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks over six innings.

In the opener, Western Connecticut rallied from a 6-2 deficit to defeat the Huskies. The Colonials used two hits, an RBI ground out from Roche and a Huskies’ error in the top half of the inning. In the bottom half, the Huskies’ took back a run on an RBI single from sophomore Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), but Western Connecticut bounced back with the final two outs of the inning to seal the win.

Bowdoin 7, Colby 0

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Senior Oliver Van Zant threw the fifth no-hitter in Bowdoin’s 146-year baseball history on Saturday in a 7-0 victory over Colby.

The school’s career strikeout leader, Van Zant allowed just two Mules to reach base – both on clear errors – and struck out 11 batters to earn the victory. It is the just the second nine-inning no-hitter in Bowdoin history, joining Leland Means ’12 no-hit effort against Bates in 1911.

He also joins Paul Clifford ’54 (six innings vs. Maine in 1952), Pat Ryan ’96 (seven innings vs. Colby in 1993) and Ricky Leclerc ’06 (rain-shortened six innings vs. Williams in 2005) as the Polar Bears to have thrown no-no’s.

Winners of five straight games, Bowdoin improves to 14-9 (5-2 NESCAC) with the win while the Mules fall to 7-9 (0-4 NESCAC). The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday in Waterville beginning at noon.

Colby had a runner reach in the fifth when Luke Duncklee’s grounder to short was fielded cleanly by Aaron Rosen, but his in-time throw pulled Luke Regan off the bag at first base. He was immediately erased on a double-play by Nathan Ellis. In the sixth inning, Ben Crocker got to first base when a high chopper fielded by Van Zant was thrown high of the first base bag, accounting for Bowdoin’s second error of the afternoon.

That would be all that Colby could muster as the senior from Westport, Connecticut, got stronger as the game wore on. Van Zant struck out five of the final six batters he faced, including striking out the side in the ninth.

Bowdoin got all the offense it would need in the second inning when Dan Findley doubled down the right field line to bring home Luke Regan. Sam Canales then hit a grounder to first that scored Rosen to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. The Polar Bears put the game out of reach with a four-run fourth inning, keyed by a bases-clearing double from John Lefeber.

Castleton State 15, Husson 3

BANGOR, Maine — Husson men’s lacrosse fell to North Atlantic Conference opponent Castleton State College Saturday afternoon, 15-3 at Boucher Field.

The two top ranked NAC teams battled in what turned out to be an extremely physical game.

The Spartans scored 2 goals within the first 10 minutes, making their statement early. Mitch Heaps (York, PA) struck first for the Eagles when a pass from Dillon Shaw (Augusta, ME) found Heaps for the score.

All eleven of the next goals were scored by the Spartans who created a hefty deficit for Husson.

Shaw took the ball all the way on to the net to make it 13-2 Castleton, but with less than 10 seconds remaining in the half Taylor Swarter found the back of the net for the Spartans once again.

Defensively the Eagles played much better the 2nd half of the game only allowing 1 goal in the final 30 minutes. That goal came from Alex Denny with 8:10 remaining in the 3rd.

Shaw connected with Heaps once again, to set the final score at 15-3. Husson offensively was the strongest in the 4th quarter with 15 shots, and 6 man up opportunities.

“Castleton is a very good team and it’s hard to get any momentum, against a strong opponent, with a lot of mistakes. We didn’t rise to the challenge today but we’ve made a lot of progress this year and this is a great motivator as everyone realizes how much further we have to go to compete with the top team in the NAC,” Said Head Coach Sean Murphy, “We have a short turn around for another conference game tomorrow but it’s a great chance to take the next step.”
