BIDDEFORD, Maine — A teenage boy surfing off Fortunes Rocks Beach managed to make it to shore safely after getting caught in a riptide Saturday.

Biddeford Fire Capt. John Pothier said his department was sent to the scene around 2 p.m. when the boy, whose name and age weren’t released, couldn’t make it back to shore.

“He was floating around on the surfboard but had difficulty getting back in,” said Pothier.

An older surfer who was also in the water made it out to the boy and helped him back to shore, Pothier said.

The boy, who was surfing alone, was evaluated at the scene but did not require a trip to the hospital, the captain said.
