HOWLAND – Roderick C. Douglass, 65, died May 16, 2013, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born Feb. 17, 1948, son of Irene (Cort) Bartlett and Cecil Bartlett and Pat and Darrell Douglass.
He grew up in Glenburn and graduated from Bangor High School in 1966. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving 23 years retiring in 1990. His service included aircraft maintenance specialist and an information management technician beginning during the Vietnam Campaign. Rod enjoyed reading, he was a great sports car enthusiast and comic book collector. He had a keen sense of humor and was always being the practical joker.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Elizabeth Leavitt Douglass; son, Stephen Douglass; grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Shakia Douglass and Jayden Douglass and his mother, Alicia. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Maria and Bobby Verrill; special nephews, Matthew and wife, Marisa, and their daughter, Addie and Craig; mother-in-law, Glenna Leavitt; and stepmother, Pat Douglass. He was predeceased by his parents, Irene and Cecil Bartlett and Darrell Douglass. Through the many long talks Rod had with Linda from Community Health and Counseling Services Hospice Care he accepted the Lord as his Savior for which we celebrate his homecoming. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks for the wonderful care he received both at Maine Veterans Home in Bangor and Community Health and Counseling Services Hospice, Lincoln office.
Graveside service and burial will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at Howland Cemetery, with the Rev. Keith Shorey officiating. Donations in his memory may be made to Maine Veterans Home, Bangor or to Community Health and Counseling Hospice. Arrangements with Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln.
