BROOKLIN AND BARCELONA, SPAIN – Dr. Edward “Ned” Barbour Hayes, 57, a lover of music, the ocean, the outdoors and life, died of a heart attack Thursday, May 9, 2013, in Barcelona, Spain. Dr. Hayes was born in Mexico City.
He grew up in Mexico, Iraq, Switzerland, Colombia and the U.S. He was a graduate of Phillips Andover Academy, Bowdoin College, where he helped start the Saltwater College, a series of events designed to heighten the awareness of the ocean and to stimulate interest in the marine ecology. He went on to Tufts Medical School and then did his residency in pediatrics at Maine Medical Hospital, Portland. He married Paz Vidal-Quadras of Barcelona, Spain, who accompanied him to Republic of the Marshall Islands in the Central Pacific for a year of adventure delivering preventive health care to isolated atolls on the square rigged sailing ship the Tole Mour. They returned to the U.S. where Ned continued his work with Center for Disease Control and Prevention, first in Atlanta, then at Maine Bureau of Health, Augusta. His work with CDC took him wherever communicable disease outbreaks such as dengue fever, West Nile virus, Lyme disease, malaria or plague occurred. Ned spent his last 11 years with CDC at Division of Vector Borne Infectious Diseases, Fort Collins, Colo. After 20 years with CDC, he moved with his family to Barcelona, Spain. Fluent in Spanish, he joined Barcelona Centre for International Health Research – CRESIB, where he became the head of Department Of Public Health, president of CRESIB Internal Scientific Committee. He was co-director of ISGlobal – University of Barcelona Master of Global Health Program and was deeply involved with teaching international courses organized by ISGlobal and other academic institutions. He was an expert advisor for the public health services of Catalunya on surveillance and control of vector-borne diseases.
He is survived by his wife, Paz Vidal-Quadras; daughters, Carolina and Clara; son, Lucas; mother, Mrs. Guy Scull Hayes “Dottie”; sisters, Lucie Hayes Semler, Anna Hayes and Priscilla Hayes Taylor; brothers, Dr. Guy H. Hayes and Dr. Bartlett H. Hayes; numerable nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He will be remembered for his curiosity, dedication, humor and compassion, and wonderful guitar and songs. He will be greatly missed.
There will be a celebration of Ned’s life in late July.
