BANGOR – Michael David Pechinski, 41, died peacefully May 22, 2013, after a brave struggle with Huntington’s Disease. Michael, born in Presque Isle, was the youngest of the four children of Dr. Joseph and Sheila Jayne Arp Pechinski.
He graduated from Bangor High School, Bangor, where he played basketball, soccer and baseball. He also graduated from Skidmore College with a degree in art history. While in college he played soccer, basketball and lacrosse. After graduation he first moved to Salt Lake City, where he enjoyed serious mountain climbing, then worked in New York for more than ten years as a sculptor, making works large, such as the giant Marvel super heroes on display at Walt Disney World in Florida, and small, as the tiny wild blueberries seen in TV commercials. Michael loved to laugh, was an avid movie fan and enjoyed all physical and outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing, mountain biking and mountain climbing. He and his Dad built and competed in the first war canoe called Naval Jelly in the Kenduskeag Canoe race in Bangor. Michael will be remembered for his ready smile, generosity and gentleness.
Michael led a joyful life and will be dearly missed by his loving mother, Sheila Pechinski of Bangor; grandfather, Ford W. Arp; brother, Matthew Pechinski and sister-in-law, Brooke; and three nephews, Baxter, Hunter and Mason, all of Falmouth; brother, Jason Pechinski and sister-in-law, Linda of Boston; and sister, Marie Karen Pechinski of Revere, Mass. He also leaves his beloved rescued dog, Waya; dear friend, Cheryl; all the special caregivers at Lowell Health Care Center; and his special friend, Curtis. He was predeceased by his father, Dr. Joseph Pechinski; and grandmother, Loretta DeBaise Arp.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Brookings- Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A
