PORTLAND, Maine — A 55-year-old man was seriously injured Thursday morning when he was struck by a car on Franklin Street.

Steven Patten of Portland was crossing the street at the Congress Street intersection around 9:45 a.m. when he was hit by a vehicle driven by Ralph Field, 60, also of Portland, according to Portland City Spokeswoman Nicole Clegg.

Patten’s injuries aren’t believed to be life threatening, Clegg said, and he is being treated at Maine Medical Center.

Field was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs, Clegg said, and the crash remains under investigation. Police didn’t elaborate on the type of drugs in Field’s system.

Any witnesses are being asked to call Portland police at 874-8532.
