SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A four-unit, two-story apartment house on Hill Street was damaged by fire early Sunday morning.

Lt. Robb Couture of the South Portland Fire Department said Monday the blaze was reported at 12:17 a.m.

Three of the four units in the building were occupied, the lieutenant said, and all seven tenants, along with two cats and a dog, made it out safely.

The fire started outside the building, according to Couture, and the State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating what caused the blaze, which quickly spread to the attic, the lieutenant said.

Firefighters from Portland and South Portland managed to get the fire under control in about 40 minutes, Couture said. He was not sure if the building was insured.

The fire remains under investigation, Couture said.
