WATERBORO, Maine — A 61-year-old man died Friday night when he lost control of his motorcycle and struck a tree, police said.

Chester Smith of Lyman was riding along Hamilton Road around 10 p.m. when his bike left the roadway and hit the tree, according to Chief Deputy William King of the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Smith, who was not wearing a helmet, was the lone person on the motorcycle, King said.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the chief deputy. Speed was believed to be a factor in the accident.

The York County Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident, King said.
