BLUE HILL – Mary Sargent Currier died peacefully June 1, 2013, surrounded by loving family. Known throughout her life as “Polly,” she was born April 27, 1950, in Winchester, Mass., daughter of James Arthur and Mary Natalie Patterson.
Her family moved to Bucksport when Polly was a child. Polly was a graduate of the University of Maine where she met and married the love of her life, Alan Currier. They were married in 1970 and moved to Providence, R.I., two years later where they welcomed boy and girl twins into their lives. Later they lived outside of Charleston, S.C., where Polly blended New England practicality with Southern charm. Life brought them to Atlanta where Polly kept a lovely home, saw her children through school and enriched the lives of all she came in contact with. Polly and her husband’s lifelong dream was to return to their native Maine for retirement, a dream that was realized just over a year ago. One of Polly’s defining characteristics was her generosity. If you were strolling with her by a storefront and mentioned that you liked an item in the window, you were likely to find that item gift-wrapped on your doorstep a few days later. She doted on her two children and more recently, on her new grandson. She loved to read and had an extensive library of books that she was always willing to lend. On mornings in Maine she was likely to be found hiking up Blue Hill Mountain, kayaking in the bay or sipping coffee in her lovingly, tended garden. Polly was an elegant, immaculate and beautiful woman.
Polly was predeceased by her parents, James and Natalie Patterson; and sister, Sally Patterson. She is survived by her husband, Alan Currier; son, Joshua Currier and wife, Dr. Jennifer Snaman, of Memphis, Tenn.; grandson, Max; daughter, Sarah Currier Pette and husband, John Pette, of Silver Spring, Md.; sister, Jane Paxton of Hallowell; two brothers, James Patterson and wife, Deej, of Winterport and Robert Patterson and wife, Kathy, of Bucksport; and many other relatives and friends.
There will be a private memorial for immediate family members to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Polly’s name to Tree of Life Food Pantry, 23 South St., Blue Hill, ME 04614 or at www.treeoflifepantry.org.
