SIDNEY – Louis Hassis, 93, Saturday, June 1, 2013, God called for one of his finest to come home.
“Sweet” Lou cut a dashing figure on the golf links at Penoby and on the dance floor Sunday nights at the Samoset Resort. Eagerly in queue, as if attending a debutante cotillion, were a bevy of beauties, longing for the chance, with Kathleen’s gracious permission, of course, for a precious minute of being guided magestically across the ballroom in the expert care of the sparkling blue-eyed charmer. He had many accomplishments in his life’s journey. He was strong enough to storm the beaches in Normandy 69 years ago this month, and gentle to draw a smile from anyone with his amazing smile and every lady loved the batting of his big, sparkling, blue eyes. To meet Lou Hassis once, was to love him forever.
He was a devoted husband to his wife, Kathleen O’Hara; and a very special dad to his sons, Jeffrey and Gary Hassis and Keith Mower; and daughter, Cynthia “Charlie” Quimby. He was a blessing and strong role model to his granddaughter, Olivia Gentes; and his three grandsons, Brandon, Aaron and Ethan Woodman. He was also blessed with two beautiful great-granddaughters, Kaelynn and Avery Woodman. He is also survived by his twin brother, Michael Hassis; and sister, Martha Benoit. He will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Zoidas Hassis; bother, Alex Hassis; and sisters, Freida Lescas and Helen Chomas.
There will be a celebration of life 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at United Methodist Church, 23 Mill St., Belfast. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to Wounded Warriors, American Heart Association, or any charity of your choice.
