EAST MACHIAS – Ruth Bagley Foss, 95, passed away June 13, 2013, at Downeast Comunity Hospital, Machias. She was born March 31, 1918, daughter of Edgar and Nellie (Adams) Bagley.
She was a graduate of Washington Academy, East Machias, and the University of Maine, Machias. Ruth was active in the local community and was involved in Washington County Genealogical Society, a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Hannah Weston Chapter, East Machias and Machiasport, Historical Societies, tax assessor of East Machias and chairman of the assessor board. Ruth was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Lambida Chapter, Alpha PSI and president and member of Retired Teacher’s Association. In 2000 she received the Maine Retired Teachers Association Volunteer/Leadership Award. She taught school in Whiting, East Machias and Machiasport.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edgar W. Foss; brothers, Burton and John Bagley; and nephew, John Bagley Jr. Ruth is survived by three sons, Malcolm Foss and wife, Sally, of South Portland, Harlan and wife, Nancy, of Limington and Richard and wife, Ellen, of East Machias; 11 grandchildren, Julie Coombs and husband, Al, of Hollis, Greg Foss and wife, Susan, of Danbury, Conn., Dallas Foss and wife, Kelly, of Riverview, Fla., Jeffrey Foss and wife, Michelle, of Bowdoin, William Foss and wife, Melissa, of Limington, Robert Foss and wife, Jennifer, of Old Orchard Beach, Thomas Foss and wife, Bobbi, of East Machias, Lynda Foss and partner, Steve Andrews, of Mars Hill, Heidi Wood and husband, Andy, of Levant, Brenda Hedtke and husband, Rich, of Appleton, Wis., and Denise Pennell and husband, Tim, of Leonardtown, Md.; 18 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces. To be remembered is special companion, Richard Gaaddis and his daughter, Jill Gardner. The last few years she resided at Davis Estates, Machias, and enjoyed many excursions in her little red chevy with caregiver, Sue Foss of East Machias.
